Hotel style: Hotel Eldorado

The hotel
Kelowna's gorgeous Hotel Eldorado has a split personality. Its Heritage wing has a quaint antique style, where no two rooms are alike. Pretty, yes, but what's really generating a buzz for the beach-, ski- and wine-country retreat is its new Eldorado Arms wing. The 30 guest rooms and six luxury suites have a low-key luxe that's pure boutique. Don't forget to hit the hotel's Lakeside Dining Room; it's got an old-fashioned resort feel and a to-die-for menu heavy in regional delicacies.

The look
The hotel fronts its own marina on Okanagan Lake, so it's fitting that the rooms in the new wing have a casually sophisticated yet relaxed beach-house vibe. Designer Tara Sullivan-Woll of Red Crayon Design Limited says, "It's supposed to feel like you're staying at Grandma's old beach house, right down to the old plaid bedskirts. It feels like home -- not institutional like a hotel."

Coral-and-lime-green plaid duvet covers, earthy cork flooring, mellow sand-tone walls, whitewashed wood furniture and eight-foot-high wall-to-wall windows create a get-happy ambience. The bathrooms benefit from a high-end spa approach, with deep soaker tubs, separate glass-enclosed shower stall, white louvered shutters and old-meets-new capsule lights. A wall-mounted Duravit sink saves space and more cork flooring unifies the bedroom and ensuite, enhancing the expansive effect.

The inspiration
Interior designer Tara Sullivan-Woll says inspiration for the room came from old-fashioned beach houses: relaxed and fresh.
