Over the past 11 years, Uniquities Architectural Antiques (5240 1A St. S.E., 403-228-9221; uniquities.ca) has become known for specializing in ancient stone and iron art. Owner Julia Shantz travels regularly to the U.K., where she sources merchandise for the store, as well as specific items for her clients. Visit her store and you'll find an assortment of garden statuary, fountain troughs, sundials and more than 150 antique gates.
If you're looking for contemporary American- and European-designed home decor, visit Robert Sweep Home Furnishings (739 11 Ave. S.W., 403-262-8525; robertsweep.com). Owner Robert Sweep offers his own established line of furniture and can create custom pieces for your space, as well. Additionally, they offer Flos lighting, Ligne Roset from France and B & B Italia from Italy.
What started out as a family-run paint store in the 1970s has evolved into a complete design centre. Owned by Greg Steebbe, Walls Alive at Home (12445 Lake Fraser Dr., 403-278-2111; wallsalive.com) now sells all the essentials necessary to decorate and accessorize the home. There's an enormous selection of unusual and beautiful fabrics, draperies, blinds, lamps, candles, tableware and comfy sofas. The store also offers custom upholstery services and has interior designers on hand for colour consultations. Staying true to its roots, Walls Alive still specializes in paints and has introduced their own C2 paint line.
