angela adams pillows and rugs

Bright shades and bold patterns define Angela Adams` designs and I love the way they liven up any space by adding beautiful bursts of colour. I find the geometric patterns intoxicating and somehow find myself unable to look away from the intricate designs. Below are some of my favourite products, available at angelaadams.com. From top to bottom: Munjoy pillow in Blue ($85); Pod pillow in Sprout ($85); Lulu rug in Dandelion ($54); Kelly rug in Dusk (prices vary according to size).

flower arranging class

arranging flower arranging class

A huuuuuuge thank-you to everyone who came out to the Norwich Library on Saturday for my flower arranging class! We had a great turnout, and I think everyone stopped by at their local nursery on the way home to pick up some fresh greens for the garden!

Here I am with the showstopper arrangement that I created during the seminar –

an easy, breezy arrangement of simple daisies and pink carnations in a rather unusual vessel… Yes, that’s a watermelon!

I simply shaved about an inch from the bottom of the melon so that it would sit stable, and then carved off the top third. Using a melon baller, I emptied most of the fruit (about two-thirds deep), and dried out the remaining interior with paper towels. After lining the interior with floral cellophane (clear cling-wrap would work wonderfully as well), I inserted pre-soaked floral foam, secured in place inside the melon with floral tape. Pop in a few of your favourite summer flowers, elevate on a cake stand, and you’ve got a quick and easy centerpiece that will have your guests talking at your next al fresco soiree!

One of my favourite things to do is Google interior designers and snoop through their portfolios. I love seeing the wonderful work they do, picking up inspiration for myself along the way and also getting to peek inside other people`s homes. I love seeing before and after photos as well. The proliferation of home makeover shows on television lets me know I`m not alone. I love to see a space being taken from drab to fab, updated in interesting and creative ways. Today, my Googling led me to Toronto-based Monica Bussoli Interiors. Below is a peek at some of her work transforming a downtown loft into a fresh and modern space.

tech-free friday: colourful artichoke lamps

lamps tech free friday: colourful artichoke lampsIgnoring that fact that these are bordering on sea-urchin-creepy-looking, don’t you think they’re fabulous? Channeling the artichoke, these table lamps are a serious work of art and their colourful bases and gorgeous shape make them worthy of today’s Tech-free Friday post.

These stunners are constructed from papier mache made of recycled materials, and handcrafted by Haitian artisans. The original comes with a white base, but you can also choose from 15 other colours, all available in low-VOC paints.

My biggest question: how do I pick just one?

Price: $625 US each

debbie travis looking good, doing good!

curefoundation debbie travis looking good, doing good!

How fabulous is Debbie Travis looking?

I did a double-take when I spotted this poster in our office promoting the upcoming “Denim Day”, a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer CURE Foundation, for which Debbie acts as spokesperson.

“I am so proud to have been chosen to be the Spokesperson for CURE Foundation – Breast Cancer 2008 & 2009,” Debbie says. “This is a cause that is very close to my heart as some of my closest friends have suffered from breast cancer.”

For a donation of at least $5 to the CURE Foundation, employees across Canada are encouraged to wear denim and/or a pink flower ribbon on Tuesday, May 12. To get Denim Days at your office, just visit the CURE Foundation website, or call 1-888-592-CURE.

Great lady, great cause!

Woo-hoo!

The Embassy of Denmark in Ottawa really appreciated a story I’d written on Danish design greats for the February 2009 issue of Style At Home, and have featured it on their website! (You can download a PDF of the original story by clicking on the link on the top right of that page.) What an honour!

looking for a wing chair?

windowshopoct08 text looking for a wing chair?

If I could wave a magic wand and add another 10 square feet to my wee apartment, the first thing I’d rush out to buy would be a wing chair. Hands down.

As a pretty voracious reader, the thought of sinking into the embrace of a cozy wing chair with a great book, cup of tea at my side, is absolute heaven.

In last October’s “Window Shopping” column for Style At Home magazine (above), I pulled together a sampling of the amazing array of wing chair styles to choose from; but as always, there wasn’t quite enough room on page to showcase them all. Here are some of the winged wonders I scouted that you DIDN’T see in the mag…
