baby food maker from williams-sonoma

img31m baby food maker from williams sonoma
Although I don’t have any little ones running around my apartment, I can appreciate a good product when I see it. Check out the Babycook from French baby food maker, Beaba. This small counter appliance multitasks as a steamer, warmer, blender and defroster to prepare fresh food for your babe. It basically steams the food first, then purees it to the desired consistency. What a great way to save some cash and be absolutely sure what’s going into your baby’s food.

Available at Williams-Sonoma, $150 US.

Yanic Simard definitely falls on my list of “ones to watch”. As the principal of the Toronto Interior Design Group, Yanic’s work on a model home in Stouffville, Ont., graced the pages of our September issue, and left us hungry for more of his thoughtful, bright and airy interiors… Here are some of my fave spaces from this fresh face on the Canadian design scene…

Check out this custom walnut dining table… Like a fresh take on the waterfall table, but in wood.

crystal clear

Imagine if you will that money was no object. How would you decorate your home differently if you didn’t have your eye firmly fixed on your bank account? Me? My tastes are pretty simple. Clean lines, fresh bright whites, clutter-free rooms, simple patterns and pretty but inexpensive accessories. While I’m delighted by more extravagant pieces, they don’t quite fit the ol’ budget, so I’ve learned to do more with less and appreciate the beauty of simplicity — a philosophy I apply to life in general, not just my decorating tastes.

However, I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that my eyes lit up when I stumbled upon these ornate pieces from B.B. Simon. Decadent and over-the-top, their collection of home accents are beautiful and brilliant. They’re blinged to the hilt, decked out with Swarovski crystals and they have no place in my simple little condo. But this doesn’t mean I don’t love them! Each piece is so unique and original, they’ll add instant interest to your space, not to mention how they’ll up the glam factor.

Here are two of my faves from their collection: (Top to bottom: Crystal doorknobs, set of six, $160; Crystal framed mirror, $11,000, gulp.)

new linksys routers focus on design

wrt610n on antennas 535x306 new linksys routers focus on design
Remember the days when your computer router was an ugly old thing with unattractive antennas and a bland boxy shape? It’s an unfortunate computer staple that’s all to familiar to most of us. These days, one of those most important aspects of home technology is its attractiveness and ability to appear seamless with your home’s design.

Cisco Consumer Business Group that produces the Cisco by Linksys Group is changing the way we view the router, and it’s about time. I had the chance to talk to Linksys’ CBG’s Senior Executive Director of Worldwide Design & Experience, Chris Landry, about the sleek new design of home routers and why they took so darned long to get a makeover.

Tech Style: Chris, technology seems to be evolving at the speed of light. Why did it take so long for the home router to be redesigned?

Chris Landry: The thing is, when we started the redesign 2 years ago, we had 48% market share, so there wasn’t a huge push for us to change anything. We started to think, though, ‘Can you imagine what we could do with a good product like what we have, but with a better design?’. Essentially, it’s easy to get stuck if you’re doing well, but we realized that in today’s world, you can no longer present the same product for more than a few years.

TS: When you set out to redesign, what did you take into consideration?

CL: The biggest thing was eliminating the antennas. Some people actually liked them and perceived them as the only way a router could communicate wirelessly. There was a lot of resistance from our engineers about getting rid of them as well, but they eventually saw that the routers worked just as well, if not better, without them. Consumers also had a distaste for the clunky shape of the router, so we set out to make a product that was contemporary in shape and colour and also left a smaller footprint in your household.

TS: Why did you decide to stick with the standard black colour?

CL: We did a bunch of market research and results showed that most people associate high technology with dark colours. It was interesting to see that North American consumers prefer dark colours, whereas European consumers prefer lighter shades.

TS: So is this product mainly geared towards the North American consumer?

CL: No, not at all. We’re constantly creating demo products and trying new things for consumers worldwide. We’ve actually established design studios in California and Copenhagen, and we have international designers who can tap into what’s popular in the different markets.

TS: And finally, the price — does a sleeker model mean we have to shell out more hard-earned cash?

CL: Nope! The prices of our routers have stayed the same, and in some cases have gone down. They’re also easier to set up, so all in all, this is a better and more attractive product for the same price as before.

decorating inspiration from movie sets

somethings gotta give decorating inspiration from movie sets
Decorating inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere. Maybe the colour of a leaf catches your eye on the street. Maybe you’re inspired by the colour of a new sweater. Or perhaps the set of a movie totally captures your imagination. At Style at Home, we`ve found that our readers love movie sets and often draw inspiration from the details of some of their favourite films. We`ve also discovered that the movie Something`s Gotta Give has really made an impression! The breathtaking Hampton`s home that belongs to Diane Keaton`s character is full of beachy style, made oh-so-inviting through attention to detail, particularly the airy colour palettes throughout and the no-muss, no-fuss approach to decorating. Pictured above is the serene kitchen, whitewashed and wonderful, exuding a sense of both form and function. We picked some other movie sets we love and have provided some tips to help you bring the look home — check them out here! So, what movie set has made you swoon. Leave a comment — I want to know!

use cyber clean for your keyboard

cyberclean small use cyber clean for your keyboard
Remember that goop that used to come in a jar when you were a kid? There was really no purpose for it, apart from sticking it to things and driving your mother crazy.

Well now that goop has come back in a similar form and it actually has a purpose — to clean in between the tiny crevices on your gadgets. I tried using Cyber Clean on my keyboard at work and it did a pretty good job. For deep down dirt, you’ll probably need air compression, but Cyber Clean does the trick for picking up crumbs and dust bunnies trapped between your keys.

ikea ps maskros pendant light

Remember that mysterious excursion to Sweden and Denmark I’ve been blathering on about for the last three months? And the secret sneak-peek IKEA granted me while at IKEA’s world HQ in Almhult?

Well, the secret’s finally out…

maskros ikea ps maskros pendant lightThe Maskros pendant lamp is the unquestionable star of IKEA’s new PS Collection – a series of stunning new products from the Swedish design powerhouse that are hitting select IKEA locations across Canada (Boucherville, QC; Etobicoke, ON; Edmonton; and Coquitlam, BC) this month.

This mammoth 31.5″ beauty is already the best-selling piece in the new PS Collection in Europe (where it was launched last February), and it’s easy to see why. Designer Marcus Arvonen looked to dandelions for inspiration for this destined-for-the-dining-room pendant, and the radiating white starbursts filter the light in truly spectacular ways. I’ve seen this installed in a plain, white-box room, and once this pendant is switched on, the light casts patterns on the walls, creating the effect of crazy custom wallpaper… It’s absolutely fascinating.

Price: $100 (For reals! Can you BELIEVE it?!?)

Available at: select IKEA locations (see above), 866-866-4532

swiss army airstream trailer

trailer1 swiss army airstream trailer

Where was THIS when I was camping a few weeks ago? Although I’m not sure it would have fit on my campsite, it definitely would’ve pimped it out.

The Victorinox Swiss Army Airstream trailer pulled up to the Style At Home offices earlier this week, en route to the CNE, which opens today. The super-stretch aluminum trailer, kitted out for Victorinox’s 125th anniversary, is a mobile treasure chest of trendy tools, and offers a taste of the real deal – a limited edition series of 125 ultraluxe 19-foot Airstreams:

Check out the interior appointments (pulled off in the iconic Swiss Army colours, of course!):

The bed’s fitted out with a luxurious custom bedding ensemble with embroidered wool blanket.

The price tag for this luxe limited edition trailer? A cool $59,000 USD.

I’m more likely to spring for this little number, myself:

This jazzy little gem (the fresh take on the iconic Swiss Army logo is so much fun!) is part of the ginormous Swiss Army collection inside the Airstream that’s now at the CNE. Definitely worth checking out if you’re planning a trip down to the Ex! (A great opportunity to pre-plan your holiday gift list…)

swedeshop: the ikea iphone app

48d01ddc645d871f ikea iphone app swedeshop: the ikea iphone appJust the mention of IKEA makes me all warm and happy inside.Their designs are modern, super affordable and they go to great lengths to keep things eco-freindly. Basically, IKEA rules.

However, if I were to nit-pick, I do find the task of writing down aisles and bins and trying to find all the products in the warehouse a little tedious. I’m more of a ‘I see, I like, I pick-up’ kind of gal.

The iPhone app store has come through once again, this time with an awesome application called SwedeShop, where you can track the IKEA items you want for easy finding at the end of your trip.

5 cool features:

1 Record items you see in the showrooms and organize by section (cooking, textiles, etc.)

2 Add details to items like the name, quantity you need, price, and priority on your shopping list

3 Take pictures of items for reference and add to the item’s folder

4 Differentiate if the item is self-serve (i.e. in the warehouse) or in housewares (IKEA Marketplace)

5 List items you will need to order from the store

To purchase for $0.99, visit the iTunes App Store.
