digitally organize your 2009

I know, I know — we’ve already discussed how amazing the Apple iPhone is. But this being a brand new year with brand new resolutions, I thought I’d resurrect the discussion and focus on the fabulous applications available for iPhone users (and for the iTouch as well!).

Pretty much every year, I resolve to organize — my home, my workspace, my life in general. And pretty much every year, I fall short of this task… UNTIL now. This year, I have begun to digitally organize my life on my iPhone through the cool applications you can purchase, and some you can get for free. I find digitally organizing to be much more efficient because everything is neatly available at your fingertips and many of the applications offer alerts that pop up to remind you of things you’ve logged.

Here’s a list of my top 5 ‘organizational’ applications:

picture 7 digitally organize your 20091) IWantItBack: Never again will you forget who borrowed your Waterford Wedgwood casserole dish. This neat little app lets you compile a list of items that you’ve lent to people, when it was lent, who you lent it to and when you expect it back. Little icons let you organize the items into categories, like CDs, money, clothes, etc. ($1.99, iTunes)

picture 8 digitally organize your 20092) Spend: I don’t think any of us want to be reminded of our dismal economy, but this app will help you stay on top of budgeting your cash. You can create daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and yearly budgets — then, whenever you dip into that budget, enter it into the category (i.e. ‘groceries’) and the app subtracts it from your allotted budget amount. ($.99, iTunes; free version also available)

picture 12 digitally organize your 20093) Shopper: While some may be budgeting, others may be shopping. I LOVE Shopper. It basically creates shopping lists for you, but in a fail-proof way. You can create templates for further grocery trips, and you never have to worry about forgetting where you saw that gorgeous houndstooth throw because you can take a photo and add it to the list. My fave part, though, is that you can create a list of the items in your shopping cart as you’re walking around a store, punch in the prices, and Shopper will add up the cost and calculate Canadian sales tax. Brilliant! ($.99, iTunes)

picture 10 digitally organize your 20094) Calendar: Okay, so this one is a freebie that already comes on your iPhone or iTouch, but trust me when I say it’s the best calendar you’ll ever use. Sleek in design and allowing you to view different calendar layouts (daily, monthly, list form), it also lets you sync it with your calendar on your home or work computer. You can set alerts and organize for a second alert if you’re the super forgetful type. With this digital calendar, you’ll never forget an appointment, birthday, or bill payment (even if you want to). (FREE!, included in software)

picture 111 digitally organize your 20095) My Stuff: This application is just one big, organizational mecca. It allows you to create lists of, well, your stuff — but all organized in one place on your Apple device. If you’re a bookworm (like myself), you can create a list of the books you’ve read, then reference it when you’re at the bookstore. Need to store the warranty information of your new laptop? Just organize it in My Stuff. This app is a fantastic way to backup all your information and have it available no matter where you are. ($4.99, iTunes)

10 things to do in january

The craziness of the holidays is behind us now. I don`t know about you but my December was frenzied. So I`m happy to welcome the slower, more civilized pace that January brings. But I don`t need to come to a complete halt either. If you`re looking for easy, practical things to do around the house this month, you should check out our story, 10 things to do in January, written by styleathome.com contributor Carmen Taylor. I`ll give you a sneak preview, but to read the rest, click here.

picture 2 10 things to do in january1 Review presents and hostess gifts
Of course your friends and family love you and were grateful for your hospitality, but no doubt you don’t really need all the tokens of affection you received. Surely someone else could make better use of that collection of tea, those pot holders or that picture frame? Hold on to what you love, by all means, but get rid of the rest by dropping it off at Goodwill, Value Village or your favourite charity.

2 Tapers, tea lights, scented …
Candles make the season and since you’ve probably gone through a whack of them, replace your stock now. They don’t have a shelf life so it’ll be one less thing to shop for next year.

3 Move the furniture
You may be surprised what you find there. Take the cushions off sofas and chairs, vacuum along the wall behind the furniture and then turn your attention to the inside of the furniture itself. After the hosting you’ve done, no doubt it needs it.

jeweled pencils

pencils jeweled pencilsI often find myself bemoaning the fact that rarely do we hand write personal letters or cards and send them out via postal service anymore. And if pretty paper and note cards (like the kind I blogged about here) aren`t enough to inspire you to put your computer away and communicate the old-fashioned way, maybe these jeweled pencils will do the trick. This simply but stylishly packaged slide box of five pencils is the perfect gift for yourself … or … fine, for someone else. With a Swarovski lead crystal at the head, these jeweled pencils are more than just writing tools. In the middle of the day, they might just come in handy as chopsticks to hold your hair up. They are jeweled, after all.

say it with pretty paper

cards1 say it with pretty paperI love sending out handwritten notes and cards. I love the whole process of it. I love carefully choosing a card or a piece of pretty paper. I love sharing a few personal words. I love signing off with a flourish, putting to paper the curves and curls of my name, perfected years ago as I sat doodling in one math class or another. But these days, we email. We text message. We Facebook and we MySpace, we instant message and we BlackBerry. We call from landlines, cordless phones and cells. But rarely do we ever take the time to put pen to paper it seems. And with such beautifully designed stationery, it`s really quite a shame. So think about it — pop a note in the mail. These cards pictured above are like a little piece of art that anyone would be thrilled to receive in the mail. Check out fabulousstationery.com for tons more designs.

Plus, take a look at these beautiful stationery options. You`re going to want to write a letter now. Do it.

blinged out office accessories

swarovski1 blinged out office accessoriesEverything`s better in crystal, don`t you think? If you thought Swarovski was all about cute but utterly pointless crystal dust-collectors … I mean figurines, collectibles, whatever you want to call them … think again! The crystal retailer offers up a killer collection of all kinds of blinged-out treats, from jewelry and accessories to home decor goodies like picture frames and stemware. But my faves are these office accessories that are totally extravagant but so pretty to look at. Talk about taking something ordinary and making it special! The Amazone Headphones (pictured left) are made of polished stainless steel with fully faceted drop-cut crystals on the ear buds. The Lock Out USB Key (pictured right) is a memory stick, masquerading as a lock. This 1GB memory stick is also made with polished stainless steel and Silver Shade crystals. You`re going to want to take good care of these!

Amazone Headphones: $175
Lock Out USB Key: $210
