colin & justin & zellers

cjcandj4 colin & justin & zellers

How could you ask for a better start to the day than a surprise call from Colin & Justin?

I first met the Glaswegian gurus of interior design back in 2006, when they’d crossed the pond to promote the latest season of How Not To Decorate for HGTV. Not long after, they made Toronto their second home, and became firm faves on the Canadian design scene — and personal faves of mine. Honestly, these are two of the loveliest gents in the biz you could ever hope to meet. (So long as you’re not harbouring any knotty pine behind closed doors, in which case you’d better hide.)

In their latest endeavour, the ever-ebullient hosts of HGTV’s Home Heist have branched out into an affordable bedding collection for Zellers, and their enthusiasm for the line is absolutely infectious. “We like to think of the range as instant room decor,” says Colin. “If your bedroom is bland, but you’re scared of wallpaper as a source of pattern, then a well decorated nest is the logical first step into a colourful world of design!”

Here’s their “Torino” Bed in a Bag:

cjtorino colin & justin & zellers“Brown continues to be big news in interior design circles,” says Colin of this yummy chocolate confection, “But we’ve added delicate fruity tones to bring everything bang up to date.”

It’s the boys’ “Graphic Flower” that’s really flying off the shelves, says Justin. “It’s already become a massive success in a short space of time, which just goes to prove that you guys are ready for LOADS of colour. Go Canada!”

“Graphic Flower”:

And Justin’s armed with tips on getting the most out of the vivid stripes-meets-tropical-florals print of “Cybernetic”: “Pick the deep yellow or black colour from the background and buy a matching rug, a couple of yellow shaded lamps, a piece of complimentary artwork, and your room will be pretty much done,” he says.

sneak peek at the one of a kind show

A busy long weekend ahead, for sure (glorious weather forecast, family wedding on Saturday, and helping my parents move for the first time in 30 years on Sunday! Sheesh!), but if you’re in Toronto, you might consider popping in to the One of a Kind Show. I took a sneak peek at the show yesterday – 450 vendors this time around! – and wanted to share some of my scouts with you here as an early Easter treat.

The real standouts of this show? Eco-chic cushions!

Amy Migicovsky of Rock My Soul crafts these brilliant, psychedelic brights right here in Toronto. At $50-$100 a pop, the silk-screened cushions are made from natural organic cotton, and deliver a startling punch of California cool. Definitely one of the most striking booth designs of the entire show.

ooak2 sneak peek at the one of a kind show“Fun, funky and bohemian” is how Amy describes her hippie chic style.

ooak3 sneak peek at the one of a kind showAlthough I’m not quite daring enough to go full-on flourescent at home, I do love Amy’s graphic Bamboo cushion at right (above).

I also had to say hi to Nathalie Butterfield and Terra Kushner of FLUF Design, whose eco-chic home textiles I’ve always admired for their earthy, grounded colourways and environmentally-conscientious design practices (image below). Lovely stuff! (They have my last feature on Fluf Design from the March 2010 issue of Style at Home hanging in their booth – thanks so much, ladies!)

I also met up with the lovely Jenna Greenberg of Hamilton’s Jenna Rose, an artisan who I’ve also had the privilege of featuring in Style at Home in the past. Her urban chic screen-printed cushions are absolutely charming (below)! The Townhouse print is so sweet.

Jenna’s also added these crazy-comfy throw blankets to her ever-expanding collection.

cute + geeky greeting cards

I’m a sucker for pretty paper goods, and when they feature cute and geeky sayings, I’m sold on the spot. If they’re letterpressed? I’m a goner. I like to surf around Etsy to search for these finds, and I was overjoyed to find these cuties from PaperWheel Press that have all three requirements.

Which one is your fave?

high tech tile at savoia

avorio segesta hotel 5 high tech tile at savoia

Gotta love this showstopping ceramic tile. Sleek, sexy and… Hygienic? Savoia — downtown Toronto’s stunning tile showroom — announces the Canadian debut of Active Antibacterial Tiles. Through a process called photocatalysis (say that five times fast), the tiles actually clean the air of polluting organic substances when hit by sunlight. Crazy cool!

If you’ve yet to browse Savoia, now’s the perfect time, as Style Sleuth readers have been invited to the showroom’s upcoming open house where you’ll have the chance to have the kitchen or bathroom of your dreams tiled FOR FREE! That’s $7,500 worth of tile, btw. If you win, you have to promise to invite me over to see the finished product! Here are the deets on the open house event…

IDS10 wrap up – guest blogger Margot Austin

I’m horning in on Mr. Sleuth’s territory one more time to give you my final wrap up on IDS10, held in Toronto last weekend. First up are my top three picks of the show.

pinecone 250x187 IDS10 wrap up guest blogger Margot Austin

No. 3 The Giant Steel Pinecone. I’m a bit of a nut for a great chunk of yard art and when you combine that with my belief in the pinecone as nature’s perfect accessory, well, this thing has can’t lose written all over it.

img 27161 250x333 IDS10 wrap up guest blogger Margot Austin

No. 2 Well, it was love at first sight when I met her Thurs. night at the gala as you know, and she’s one of the main reasons this booth — Lightform/Metalarte — was an award winner (more on that later in the post). Still love her, miss her…

cbcradio 249x172 IDS10 wrap up guest blogger Margot Austin

No. 1 Oh my, it’s as if this was custom designed for me. Thanks Tristan Zimmermann of Science + Sons. So, here’s the deal: it’s called Radio Canada and it allows CBC Radio-addicted householders (that’s me) to switch from Radio 1 to Radio 2 without moving an old school dial through static (if you’re thinking digital tuning and presets already solved this, well, you just aren’t one of us, so skip along now). As a bonus it has MP3 player capacity for when Jonathan Goldstein is on. Anyhoo, this baby is a prototype so click on over to Science + Sons and sign up for the news on when production will begin.

I caught lots of inspiring speakers, including the PechaKucha — loved that! Met the super talented Ingrid Abramovitch and got a behind the covers tour of what it’s like to be the author of a stunning new book, Restoring a House in the City. V. JEALOUS!  Another highlight was being on the judging panel to distribute the design awards for booths at the show. I breezed in there thinking it would take 30 minutes, but more than 3 hours later I was still debating and assessing with fellow judges. I selected in the 400 sq ft booth category but didn’t hesitate to pressure fellow judges into going with my faves in their categories, too, ’cause that’s just the kind of girl I am.

judges 250x187 IDS10 wrap up guest blogger Margot Austin

Here come da judges (we even had official IDS clipboards). From left, John Tong of 3rd UNCLE Design, moi, Clayton Budd of 64th and Queen Design Agency.

For me, the challenge came down to which is most important: the product, the installation, the signage or the layout?? Well, I decided to go with product first, ’cause without that, the rest is gravy. So, I chose Lightform/Metalarte (see  lamp above) and Lema as my winners. Lema had just the most beautiful closet fittings I have ever seen. And the stylist in me loved the black paper suit jackets hanging in their closets. One simple idea to elevate the whole presentation.

Boo, this pic isn’t doing Lema justice, but it’s the best I can find.

See you at IDS11, Jan 27-30, 2011. Thanks Mr. Sleuth. – Guest blogger and STYLE AT HOME senior design editor Margot Austin signing out.

IDS10 lighting news – guest blogger Margot Austin

Off the top, a giant huzzah and merci beaucoup to my pal the Style Sleuth for inviting me to guest here in his regular cyber spot. I’m just back from the gala opening of the Interior Design Show 2010 at the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto and I have seen the light! I’ve been thinking a lot about light these days — or the lack of it around these parts this time of year — so it’s no wonder that great new lighting designs were my top takeaway from tonight’s first go ’round. Here’s what I spied:

img 26961 250x280 IDS10 lighting news guest blogger Margot Austin

Very cool sconces in one of the sheds designed for the 5 Small Rooms exhibit. This space by Stephane Chamard and Francoise Turner Larcarde of FTL+SC Studio.

img 2714 250x187 IDS10 lighting news guest blogger Margot Austin

Tout le monde was ooohing and aaaahing over these lovelies. 20 IKEA PS MASKROS -- giant paper spheres inspired by dandelions. Simple, yet magical.

img 2720 250x333 IDS10 lighting news guest blogger Margot Austin

...And just a few booths away, the Moooi Raimond spheres at the Klaus booth.

img 2722 169x350 IDS10 lighting news guest blogger Margot Austin

An ethereal cascade of hand-blown glass spheres by Gregor Herman, some with colour, some with texture, each bouncing light every which way. J'adore.

img 2723 250x256 IDS10 lighting news guest blogger Margot Austin

Perfectly simple and modern by Secto Design.

img 2730 250x247 IDS10 lighting news guest blogger Margot Austin

Ok, I knew that Zac Ridgley of Ridgely Studio Works was talented, but this is ridic! This sconce looks like light peaking out of a crumpled sheet of solid gold. I'll take a pair please!

This floor lamp from Diesel for Foscarini is all 21st-century-loft-meets-'50s-beauty-parlor-hairdryer. no?

And for a dedicated Ilse Crawford fan such as moi, finally seeing this little lamp beauty with the saucy red cord in real life was as good as spotting a celeb. Have loved it from afar, but this was my first 3D meetup. Yum! Thanks to Stephanie Lees of Eye Spy Studio for bringing it in for her 5 Small Rooms space. And BTW, Stephanie's own place is amazing and we are shooting it soon for an upcoming issue of STYLE AT HOME. Stay tuned!

Can’t wait to head down to the show again tomorrow and Sat. After all, couldn’t exactly do the whole show tonight wearing these:

One of my fave sources for over-the-top-glamorous tableware — Kim Seybert — is hosting a sample sale next week, and the savings are unbelievable: 40 – 60% off retail!
