cb2.com launches canadian shipping

cb2 cb2.com launches canadian shipping
I’m so excited that us Canucks can now shop online at cb2.com. The retail site went international on Monday and I’ve already clocked a few hours combing through the site to see what’s available.

There’s no bricks and mortar CB2 store in Canada just yet (though it’s coming, hopefully by the summer), but until then, a little online shopping should sate me. You’ll find mostly home accessories online – no large furniture items due to challenges with cross-border shipping, but there’s more than enough great stuff online to excite you.

Favourite part: One of a Finds
This section of the site features original, limited edition pieces with a small release. I love this rustic wagon wheel mirror (pictured above, $299), as much for its beauty as for its history. The recycled wheels used to make this piece originate from the western state of Gujarat in India and have a history dating back to the 1930s.

makeover monday: paint projects

A lot of times when I head out shopping, it’s rare to find exactly what I’m looking for. I’ll fawn over a great duvet cover, but it’s only available in King. I’ll spot a fabulous chair but it has a big stain on the upholstery. More than often, I’ll find a fantastic patterned throw cushion, but it won’t be available in the colour I need. As you can imagine {since most experience the same frustration}, this can get tiring.

Lately though, I’ve embraced imperfections — it becomes an improvement project rather than just a pretty purchase. Below are two pieces I’ve bought because of their shape, but I’m not crazy about the colour. Both are HomeSense purchases (love, love, love) — the mirror was $35 and the table was $50. By default, I immediately thought to spray them white, but now I’m rethinking — should I paint them a bold hue to add a pop of colour to my place?

So this is where I need your help — what colour should I paint them? Most of my walls are a light grey {‘Clamshell’ from the Style at Home Colour Collection} so use that as a starting point. I’m thinking maybe a plum for mirror and a deep navy for the table.

Let me know what you would do!

Lauren

P.S. You’ll notice there are two random pink tiles in our bathroom. They have been there since we moved in and they are the bane of my existence.

crate and barrel opens in mississauga

Crate and Barrel threw open the doors of its third Canadian location to the public today, just in time for the holidays. I attended a preview of the new store last night and it’s everything you’d expect from the furniture and housewares retailer. The store is huge! It’s 24,000 square feet and it’s located just across the street from Square One in Mississauga. (Did you know that Crate and Barrel opened its first store in Chicago in 1962? I had no idea!) It’s wall-to-wall style in there – from accessories, kitchen gadgets, tableware and Christmas decorations to furniture, dishware, rugs and lamps. Check out some of my favourite finds:

daytripping to gananoque

A few weekends ago, a friend and I went for a weekend away in Gananoque. The fall weather was beautiful and it was a great getaway, even after things had slowed down since the busy summer months. We stayed at the beautiful Victoria Rose Inn, discovered some amazing shopping gems, and dined at the breathtaking waterfront restaurant, The Ivy. Here’s a run-down on where to stay, shop and eat when visiting Gananoque.

1) Sleep at the Victoria Rose Inn

Driving up to this beautifully restored Victorian house is a sight in itself, with the pretty wraparound porch, full garden and incredible architecture. We walked through the doors into a spacious foyer with a sparkling chandelier overhead. As for our room? Complete with a four poster bed, marble-mantel fireplace and decorated with an abundance of whites and creams. The innkeepers, Susanne and Bernie, were wonderful and made us feel like their own visitors, rather than just guests of the inn.

2 Grab a coffee at The Socialist Pig
Don’t think too much about the name — instead, turn your focus to the quirky design of the space and the unique beverage flavours (you must try the harvest apple pie tea latte!). Located in a beautiful old building on Gananoque’s main strip, the shop is a community hangout area with WiFi and a smiling team of baristas behind the counter. We settled down with some tea on a windy fall day and fell in love with the counter space made from stacked books and the patron tables topped with old plastic Samsonite suitcases. They don’t have a website yet, but you can follow them on Facebook.

3 Dine at The Ivy

About a 15 minute drive from Gananoque’s downtown is The Ivy, a breathtaking restaurant on the waterfront property of the Ivy Lea Club. Recently having undergone an extensive renovation, the restaurant is grand, yet cosy — we loved the large stone fireplaces, beamed ceilings and enormous wrought iron chandeliers. Oh, and don’t let me forget the food! The meal was delicious, from the warm bread  and butter rolled in poppyseeds to the flavourful salmon atop a bed of lentils. Yum!

4 Shop for locally made home accessories at Willow Soul
I love stumbling upon little boutiques, and Willow Soul was such a great treasure to find. The owner, Lisa, really takes the time to showcase items from local artists, whether from the 1000 Islands region or Kingston (where she has another Willow Soul location). You can find great gift items (soaps, handmade napkins, customized Moleskine journals) or perfect accessories and artwork to pull your home together. And don’t get me started on the jewelry — oh, that beautiful, beautiful jewelry. But the best part of Willow Soul? Everything is wonderfully affordable.

5 Spend hours shopping for architectural salvage at Balleycanoe
If you drive for abut 20 minutes outside of Gananoque, you’ll stumble upon the most precious of hidden gems called Balleycanoe – maybe. Hidden down windy farm roads is a barn that houses an overwhelming amount of architectural salvage — hardware, newel posts, stained glass windows and some 1500 doors just to name a few. Balleycanoe is its name, and John Sorenson is the man behind this jawdroppingly incredible space. The great thing is, any store you pop your head in to in Gananoque will have a piece from Balleycanoe used to display clothes or add some artistic appeal. As for me, I picked up two old crates for just $50 a pair and am planning some great things for them for the holiday season.

custom photo projects at IndigoStudio

Digital cameras have allowed us to keep hundreds upon thousands of pictures, and if you’re anything like me, these pictures are stored away on a hard drive, or, at most, posted on online photo-sharing accounts, like Facebook and Flickr. Allow me to introduce you to the newest innovation in the age of digital photography (and one I’m super excited about): IndigoStudio.

Indigostudio custom photo projects at IndigoStudio

I was lucky enough to receive a personal preview of IndigoStudio, which is being rolled out in Indigo stores across Canada (as of now, it’s in two GTA locations). It’s seriously cool! In a matter of minutes, I was able to customize one of their products with pictures of a recent vacation to the east coast of Canada. I didn’t have my camera’s memory card or a usb stick with me, but was fortunately able to access my photos through my Facebook account. I selected the product I wanted to customize (a brag book, perfectly sized for purse or pocket), the pictures (or let auto-fill randomly select them for you) and…that’s it! I sent the project to the printer. It was ready in just 45 minutes. Looks like my friends and family will be getting these personalized and professional-looking photo projects for all major gift-giving occasions – Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, Fridays. Products available to customize include collage and individual frames, greeting cards, calendars and brag books.

30,000 sq.ft. of homesense

What a way to start the weekend! I had the opportunity to sneak a peek at the new HomeSense in Toronto this morning and I have just one word: woah.

I salivate upon approaching the doors of any HomeSense, so when I walked into the newest and largest location in Canada, my nametag should have read “Pavlov’s dog”. The store at 957 Eglinton Ave. E. has over 30,000 square feet of the fab home wares that you’ve come to love about HomeSense, all perfectly organized and beautifully displayed. I, of course, went over my shopping budget, but how could I resist? Nestled in amongst the usual pretty accessories (my weakness), there was also a huge selection of holiday decor (my ultimate weakness).

The new location doesn’t officially open until October 26th, but I’ll share a few snaps of the store and of some of my fave finds.

have you checked out the new indigo website?

indigo web3 have you checked out the new indigo website?
When the new Indigo website launched about two weeks ago, a handful of us over here at our offices spent a long time checking things out. (I won’t say how long, lest certain people get the idea that we weren’t working, but technically, it was all in the name of research.)

If you’ve checked out the website pre-launch, you’re sure to notice the difference immediately. The new design is simple but beautiful and it’s super-easy to navigate, making buying books for yourself or gifts for others a breeze. The folks from Indigo gave us a tour of the website this afternoon and these are some of the new elements I’m most excited about:

indigo web1 have you checked out the new indigo website?
The new design: The website features bigger, more beautiful images and is way more visually appealing than before. It’s inspiring – if you don’t know what you’re looking for, just spend a few minutes surfing around. You’re bound to find that perfect something.

Greater product selection: There’s way more stuff than just books. I love the GIFTS section.

Debit card shopping: Apparently they’ve offered this service for over a year, but I had no idea you could pay with your debit card. Cool!

Birthday reminder service: Enter in important birthdays to remember and you’ll be sent an email reminder and gift ideas via email.

I’ve always been a big fan of Indigo, both in-store and online and the new website is fantastic. I see myself getting a lot of my Christmas shopping done online at chapters.indigo.ca this year!

etsy find: pretty ceramics

Lurking around Etsy again, I stumbled upon Whitney Smith Pottery, a seller that specializes in handmade ceramics. I fell in love with the simplicity of the wee cupcake stand below and the beauty of the flower-inspired nesting bowls. Check out Whitney’s Etsy page for more vintage-y wares (she will also do custom sizes and colours).

cosy throws from dwell studio

As I sit here on my sofa, wallowing in self-pity from having a cold, I’m craving a warm throw to snuggle with (my beagle puppy Wendel just doesn’t cut it sometimes). I saw these baby alpaca throws from Dwell Studio and have fallen head-over-heels. Totally luxurious, these throws have a fabulous graphic print that would look great draped over the back of the sofa (when it’s not draped over myself, of course). I guess the only question is: which colour to choose?

deciding on artwork

Most of the hard work is done on my condo and now my wonderful designer Lisa and I are moving on to the fun stuff – accessorizing and taking care of the details. I’ve definitely stretched myself beyond my budget and Lisa keeps admonishing me, reminding me that it’s better to spend my money on items I really love and that will service me best, rather than cheaping out. {Sigh.} I know she’s right.

When it comes to artwork, I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to hang on the walls. I don’t like hanging art for the sake of hanging art. I feel that the things you choose to hang on your walls should mean something – art to me is more than a form of decorating; I feel it speaks to who you are.

So with this in mind, Lisa and I decided to create an art display featuring some of my favourite photographs taken on my travels around the world. We headed over to Walmart to find frames … budget-friendly frames; yay!

lisa walmart deciding on artworkHere’s Lisa in Walmart, contemplating ways to arrange the frames!

frames deciding on artworkWe took the frames home and continued to play with the configuration. We haven’t hung them yet and are still deciding on which photos to use.

This is yet another element of my new space that I can’t wait to see completed. Inexpensive frames and personal photographs make this an easy but beautiful way to adorn my walls with artwork that is meaningful to me.
