behind the scenes at a video shoot

Today we were hard at work shooting a styleathome.com video on making the perfect bed. From finding the best sheets and duvet covers to styling your bed so that it looks as good on the outside as it feels on the inside, we dissected the process from beginning to end for you.

The video will be online soon but until then, here’s a sneak peek at the beautiful bed and the gorgeous linens from Au Lit Fine Linens.

summer palette: pale blue and white

A perennial summer fave, the pairing of blue and white always feels fresh and relevant. But while a crisp navy is bold and energetic, the juxtaposition of white with a soft, pale blue spells serenity and calm.

Sico Paints has selected the appropriately-titled Serene Blue 6007-31 as one of its hottest hues of the season.

A sneak peek at Eileen Fisher’s dreamy new bedding for Garnet Hill – part of her Fall 2010 collection. I love how the various blues come to life in this rustic white envelope.

…And one of my all-time fave bathrooms Style at Home, in which homeowners Sean Ward and Stephen Fillmore carried their delicious English eccentricity into the ensuite via crisp blue Tartan wallpaper. Check out the full interior here.

spring into summer at pottery barn

Looking down at the showroom floor at Pottery Barn’s 100 Bloor St. W. location in Toronto

It’s Top Five List time!

Summer has hit Pottery Barn showrooms across the country, and I had the opportunity to take a gander at the goods this morning. Here’s my scoop on their new summer essentials…

1. Natural Curiosity Melamine Collection

1melamine2 spring into summer at pottery barnRemember that coffee table book that everyone had (but never read) a few years back? The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities? Well, this melamine is the rather delicious dinnerware version of the illustrations in that book. Pretty, upscale prints that add a touch of sophistication to a summer table setting.

2. Townsend Occasional Tables

Like so much of Pottery Barn’s summer offerings, this classy cocktail table (which retails for $499) leaves room for you to put your own personal stamp on it. The tabletop lifts, revealing little niches in which you can display seasonal smalls.

The Townsend also comes in this sleek console version ($499 as well), which I’d love have in the bedroom to display and store my ever-growing arsenal of neckties. How pretty would that look?townsend7 spring into summer at pottery barn

3. Starfish Duvet Cover & Sham

4. Crewel lampshades

Exquisite crewelwork elevates these shades into works of art. What a fantastically easy way to reinvent a nondescript lamp base! Would love to pair this with a bulky balustrade lamp base in a weathered, cerused wood finish…

5. Crab placecard holders

decor: pretty in pink

There was once a time when pink was probably the most un-hip colour in the world. Many boasted they’d never be caught dead in pink and a man wearing pink — utterly unheard of! And as for decor, pink was reserved for cutesy nurseries or young girls’ bedrooms. Beyond that, the colour was shunned. These days, it’s hard to imagine a colour that can’t work in a space, if handled with care, of course. With the right room and the right accessories, any colour can find its place in your home. And besides, isn’t the most important thing that you like it? That should always be your starting point.

So, as today’s online travels led me to neimanmarcus.com, I was struck by the abundance of pink. No longer girly or childish, the colour takes on an elegant sophistication and I find it fresh and soothing. What do you think? Check out some of my fave finds:

eileen fisher bedding

eileen fisher border2 eileen fisher beddingOne of my biggest pet peeves has to be finding something I love online and then discovering that the U.S. retailer doesn`t ship to Canada. I just don`t understand how cross-border shipping can still be such a problem. Regardless, I love cyber-shopping and getting inspiration from photos, even if I can`t purchase the product. This bedding from Eileen Fisher is just stunning. I adore the muted colour palette and the hand-tufted pure silk comforter.
