I finally did it: a vignette inspired by my vintage Hardy Boys collection. icon wink turquoise delight on cityline

Seriously, though – turquoise is a really hot hue that’s popping up everywhere we look, as you’ll see in my segment from yesterday’s episode of CityLine. (Watch it HERE!)

decorating for fall – copper bird garland

If you associate fall decorating with dusty garlands of plastic burnt-yellow leaves, you might want to take a look at what I found at Vancouver Island’s Indaba Trading

This stunning wire garland takes on-trend bird motifs and weaves them into an equally trendy warm copper-coloured wire garland.

“This fall it’s all about bringing the outdoors in and using motifs and objects that reflect the wonder and beauty of the natural world,” says Irene Gillespie, Indaba’s owner and CEO.

I’d love to see this garland on a tabletop, weaving its way through various centerpiece ornaments, or even crumpled into a bird’s nest (pardon the pun) and displayed in a rose bowl… So pretty! What’s more, this garland has seasonal staying-power, and will work just as well over the holidays.

must have: umbra chirp finials

picture 21 must have: umbra chirp finials

It’s a shame that drapes get all the attention, when there’s so much gorgeous drapery hardware out there that’s vying for the spotlight. New from Umbra is this adorable little fella, a finial that acts as a checklist of on-trend elements: silhouettes, birds and quirky hardware. What’s more, this piece is part of Umbra’s “Meli-Melo” mix-and-match drapery program, that allows you to choose a rod, add a pair of finials and create your own custom drapery combination.

before & after: funky wallpaper

grahambrown before & after: funky wallpaperI’m a sucker for a good “before and after”, and these two shots demonstrate how few rolls of wallpaper can totally transform a space. My friend Genevieve hosted a “wallpapering party” last weekend, and invited four buddies over to lend a hand in making over her kitchen with the gorgeous new Birdcage wallpaper from Graham & Brown’s stunning Mode collection of papers. It took them only four hours — including breaks! — to achieve this terrific transformation. Combining on-trend bird motifs with a boho-chic colourway, Gen’s kitchen is now fresh and fab for 2009!

must have: bird cake mould

moule bird must have: bird cake mouldSilhouettes are showing no signs of slowing down! We first did a feature on the rising popularity of this age-old art form back in the February 2008 issue of STYLE AT HOME (check out my interview with world-renowned cut-paper silhouette artist Karl Johnson here!), and the market is now positively booming with ever-more innovative decorative applications. I particularly love small and sweet animal silhouettes that pop up in totally unexpected places, like at the bottom of this Limoges porcelain cake mould from Iddko — a fantastic Canadian e-tail site that you *must* check out!

a safe nonstick frying pan

greenpan1 a safe nonstick frying panThere`s been a lot of controversy in recent years about the safety of nonstick pans. Most experts now agree that they`re safe if you observe certain protocols while cooking, like not letting the pans get overly hot, or preheating them to too high a temperature.

Still doubtful? Check out GreenPan products! I absolutely love my frying pan and, in fact, prefer it to other nonstick pans I`ve used in the past. It boasts Thermolon nonstick coating, a new, non-PTFE* form of coating, and you really can use it without oils or butters; just follow the instructions re heating and cleaning and you`re good to go! I just have a frying pan so far, but you can get complete sets of pots and pans if you like.
