It was a dark day when Polaroid announced they were no longer producing their old school cams that used film to print out automatic pics. The white border around the image was iconic, and the vintage wash over the shot made every picture seem more interesting than it probably was. Those days are long gone…or are they?
Check out rollip.com, a great website that lets you upload your personal pics and then transform them into Polaroid-style shots. The site lets you play around with your pictures too, allowing you to add text on the bottom and pick what type of exposure you want. Plus, it’s free — sweet!

To me, nothing screams summer more than having a cocktail and some chit-chat with friends while sitting on a Toronto patio. Ah, ‘tis the life. And whenever I can document those fun times by taking pics, I become a snappy-happy paparazzi. With the grass green again and summer just on the horizon, I was on the lookout for a camera to reflect my mood. Enter the Olympus bevy of bright beauties, a selection of vibrant cameras to fit every lifestyle.

The FE 3010 (magenta) is a super slim 0.7-inch digi-cam with 16 shooting modes for any situation ($180). The Stylus Tough 6000 (citrus) is a do-it-all camera — shockproof, freezeproof, waterproof, crushproof, and shakeproof ($350). Ready to go under the sea? The Stylus-550WP (blue) is designed to work just as well below water as it does on land ($250).
With pretty punches of colour and pricepoints to fit whatever your budget, these colourful cameras are a summer must.

Tired of your cell phones, PDAs and cameras sucking up electricity? Check out the Solio Universal Chargers.
The portable solar chargers are petite enough to fit in the palm of your hand and unfold into a flower shape (very pretty! OK, not exactly relevant, but, still, pretty!). They’re portable enough that you can carry them while out hiking, at the beach, pretty much anywhere, or just use them at home.
Stick a pencil in the hole in the centre and position facing the sun, wait a day (maybe more if it’s cloudy) and you’re good to go! I live in a south-facing apartment in Toronto, and I put it in the window, behind the glass and didn’t even bother to reposition it to follow the movement of the sun, and in a single sunny day, it was fully charged. It holds the charge for up to one year.
The Classic comes with a charging cable; suction cup for mounting on a window (great for your car); female and mini USBs; and Samsung, Nokia, LG, and Sony Ericsson adapter tips.
Sadly, I couldn’t use it to power my iPhone 3G (the 3G somehow doesn’t recognize the Solio and after a couple of seconds of charging, shuts down, thinking it’s done), so I passed it on to web producer Lauren McPhillips to try out with her Sony Ericsson cell phone.
She says, “It worked quickly and the charge lasted really long. I loved it!” The Solio does work with the older iPhones, and a new tip should be out within the month to solve the 3G iPhone problem.
And, no, they’re not inexpensive, but they’ll last absolutely forever, and come a power outage, you’ll be laughing as your cell phone will be the only one working for miles around. Now if only they were powerful enough to charge up power-sucking laptops!
Available at: solio.com
Price: $99.95 US

A design editor’s most prized tool is his digital camera, and when my trusty old scouting aid finally bit the dust last week, I felt a bit lost. Kodak came to the rescue with this candy apple red stunner that’s scheduled for release in September – the new Kodak EasyShare M1073 IS. It’s just what I need – an entry level, point-and-click 10.2 megapixel camera with an absolutely huge display screen that even a confirmed Luddite like myself can operate with ease. Let the scouting continue!
Price: $180
Available in September 2008 at: Kodak; Staples Business Depot, 800-668-6888 for stores; Wal-Mart, 800-328-0402 for stores.
I`m all about multi-functional these days. I mean, why invest in three things to perform three different tasks when you can rely on one thing to perform three tasks? Yes, I am of the BlackBerry generation — one device for phone, email, music, calendar … I`m hooked! So when I discovered Kodak`s ESP-5 all-in-one printer, I knew I`d love it. It`s sleek and sexy and so easy to use. So what does this wonder printer do? It prints (duh), copies and scans but what I love most is the three-inch LCD screen for viewing and editing. And, it features memory card and USB slots so that you can view, edit and print your materials, even if you don`t have a computer hooked up to it. When did something as practical as a printer get so exciting? It`s both Mac- and PC-compatible and has space for two cartridges; black and a five-colour cartridge. Perfect for your home office as long as you actually work and don’t spend your day playing with your new gadget!
Available at: Staples Business Depot and London Drugs or online at kodak.ca.
Price: $169.99
