5 reasons to get a bean bag chair

Have you ever sat in a bean bag chair and just uncomfortably sagged into the floorboards? I used to own one and it didn’t take long for the filling to deflate and become a useless lump. Clearly, the bean bag chairs of yore had an expiry date. How disappointing.

But years after I had retired my chair and given up on the concept, I receive an invite for a bean bag chair event with Beanbag Boss. They’ve brought them back and I was definitely curious.

Well, I went. I saw. They impressed.

chair makeover in progress

After heading off to Aruba and Curacao for a week of rest and relaxation, I was delighted to come home and get an update on the chair I’m getting refinished. The craftsmen over at Carrocel Restorations were fantastic with taking a ton of pictures throughout the process, so I got to see how much they actually stripped it down. Here are a few of the snaps they took — I can’t wait until it’s finished!

decor: pretty in pink

There was once a time when pink was probably the most un-hip colour in the world. Many boasted they’d never be caught dead in pink and a man wearing pink — utterly unheard of! And as for decor, pink was reserved for cutesy nurseries or young girls’ bedrooms. Beyond that, the colour was shunned. These days, it’s hard to imagine a colour that can’t work in a space, if handled with care, of course. With the right room and the right accessories, any colour can find its place in your home. And besides, isn’t the most important thing that you like it? That should always be your starting point.

So, as today’s online travels led me to neimanmarcus.com, I was struck by the abundance of pink. No longer girly or childish, the colour takes on an elegant sophistication and I find it fresh and soothing. What do you think? Check out some of my fave finds:

looking for a wing chair?

windowshopoct08 text looking for a wing chair?

If I could wave a magic wand and add another 10 square feet to my wee apartment, the first thing I’d rush out to buy would be a wing chair. Hands down.

As a pretty voracious reader, the thought of sinking into the embrace of a cozy wing chair with a great book, cup of tea at my side, is absolute heaven.

In last October’s “Window Shopping” column for Style At Home magazine (above), I pulled together a sampling of the amazing array of wing chair styles to choose from; but as always, there wasn’t quite enough room on page to showcase them all. Here are some of the winged wonders I scouted that you DIDN’T see in the mag…

a lament for discontinued ikea

It is with deep sadness and regret that I wish to inform you that IKEA’s Arvinn chair is not long for this world…

arvinn a lament for discontinued ikea

Parting with a favourite piece can be such sweet sorrow. The Arvinn – perhaps the ultimate folding cafe chair – will remain in stock in the woody Antique Stain, but I always preferred the White option, and that’s the one that’s headed for the great IKEA Museum in the Sky by the end of June. At only $50 bones a pop, I’d strongly suggest you rush out and pick up as much of these as you can before they start disappearing forever. They’re a fantastic small space solution — just hang them on the wall folded when they’re not in use — and the price point simply can’t be beat.

I was also surprised to find another iconic IKEA release has recently vanished from shelves, and that’s the Stockholm green glass vase:

This was one of those contemporary classics that seemed to pop up in every interior, making it more of a natural choice for discontinuation (is that even a word?), if only because of its overexposure. Still love it, though.

But there’s no single IKEA piece that I miss quite like the Lack sofa table.

This pared-down, Parsons-style stunner was probably the most versatile table that IKEA’s ever released. I’ve owned about five or six of them — three of which were purchased the second I heard these were being discontinued in mid-2005 — and they’ve served me so well. As a standard sofa table, anchoring a floating piece of furniture in a room; as a console in the front hall; and even as a makeshift breakfast bar, the Lack tackled all of my small space dilemmas with simplicity and style, and is sorely missed.

Of course, discontinuing stock is a spring cleaning ritual that means exciting new releases are just around the corner. I’m off to Sweden at the end of May to report on all the amazing new products IKEA’s dreamt up for 2009 that will have your “loving your home” more than ever. Will keep you posted!

Happy birthday, Bauhaus!

It’s the 90th anniversary of the influential Bauhaus design school, where some of the 20th century’s most innovative designers experimented with the new malleable steel tubing, shaping it into furniture forms still recognizable today.

To celebrate this special birthday, European furniture-maker extraordinaire Thonet is releasing a special edition of Dutch architect Mart Stam’s iconic S-43 Cantilever Chair. What makes this special anniversary re-issue even cooler are the colours — a glorious spectrum of textured enamel options that breathe new life into this design classic from 1931.

These iconic pieces of 20th century design always take me back to my grandma’s kitchen. In the 1980s, she had a couple of them upholstered in a burnt sienna vinyl (I wonder why that’s not an option in the reissue?…;), and I remember rocking them back and forth until they inevitably tipped over… Sorry, Mr. Stam…
