decorating my christmas tree

We’re talking Christmas trees here at the Style at Home offices. I put mine up a few weeks ago and thought I’d share some photos.

But now I put up an artificial tree. I wasn’t keen on the idea at first but I found a beautiful 7-foot tree at Loblaws (part of their PC Home collection) and I must admit, I love it!

What’s your Christmas tree colour palette?

Having spent the better part of my weekend choosing, buying and decorating my Christmas tree, it was only fitting that I snap a few photos to show you the end-result! This is the first Christmas I am spending in Toronto and I really wanted to make it feel special. I decided on a white and silver colour palette this year, a beautiful classic.

My only pet peeve when it comes to Christmas trees is spending money on a – usually very unattractive – tree stand. My alternative is to ‘plant’ the tree in a dark grey planter, half filled with gardening rocks and half filled with neatly packed soil. It makes the tree stand out that much more and also allows you to invest in a planter that you can use once the spring makes its way back in.

Now, for the ornaments! Isn’t there something just magical about putting up that very first ornament? It gets me every year. Here are a few of my favourite ornaments – they all bring back a happy memory of the place where I found them.

You might have read my post listing expert tips to decorate your Christmas tree. Filling your tree with inexpensive ornaments and then edging it with your special pieces was key to getting a professional look. I have about a dozen of these silver balls, scattered around the tree.

christmas tree decorating tips at the teatro verde store in bayview village

A couple days ago, I made my way to Bayview Village to get some very timely holiday inspiration. Away from the ever-increasing busyness of Toronto’s downtown core, this chic little mall is filled with beautiful hand-picked stores that are stocked with special holiday finds. During my visit, I was introduced to Shawn Gibson, the talented co-founder of Teatro Verde, a great resource for home decor items. Here are some of his tips to decorate your Christmas tree to perfection this year, as well as a few of the pretty trees in the store.

a green christmas book

greenerchristmas a green christmas book
This book from the whimsically named Sheherazade Goldsmith is a wonderful read, covering off all aspects of holiday celebrations. She says, “The book is about having a simpler, more home-spun Christmas….I hope [it] will inspire you to take a different approach to Christmas and spare you the stress of excess consumerism.” From welcoming your guests with beautiful decorations for the outside of your home to setting up and embellishing your tree, making gifts, cooking for the holidays, and setting your table, Goldsmith has it covered.

The crafts are simple, yet beautiful (templates are included), the recipes yummy-sounding (the Nougat Sweets are ones I absolutely have to try out!), and the eco tips on recycling and composting are sound. Where else can you get such an interesting mix of ideas! Plus, at the back, there’s a directory listing places to find info on green items and services not just in the U.S., which is often the case, but some in Canada, too! Hurrah!

Available at: bookstores across Canada

A Christmas tree can be fully decked out in a cohesive colourway of ornaments, loaded with bells, balls and baubles, and radiant with twinkling lights, but unless there’s something personal in the mix, it can still feel empty. If you’re anything like me, your pets are your babies, and Bed Bath & Beyond offers a too-cute kit to allow your four-legged friend leave an impression (geddit? haha) on your holiday decorating. A DIY kit includes everything you need to make a pawprint ornament: lightweight clay, wooden rolling pin, shaping ruler, festive ribbons for hanging, and a plastic hole punch. What’s more, there’s no mixing because the clay is ready-to-use!
