win: great back to school supplies from indigo

I was never one of those kids who dreaded going back to school. On the contrary, I eagerly awaited my first day back, excited about all the possibilities the new school year promised. I enjoyed school, both the academic and the social aspects of it. I enjoyed learning. And I enjoyed the back to school shopping! It was never anything extravagant – but I can still remember the excitement to stock up for the coming year – especially shiny new school supplies! You know, replace my old pencil case, get a new set of Laurentian pencil crayons (this may have been the highlight!) and a new Finder Binder – please tell me you remember Finder Binders! Oh, I’m nostalgic just thinking about it!

As back to school season rolls around again, kids all around the world are getting ready to hit the books, some more excited than others, I imagine. If you’re one of them or have kids that are heading back, we want to hear what your best strategy is for staying organized during this notoriously hectic time of year. Leave a comment below with your best back-to-school organizing tip and you’ll be entered in our contest to win one of two great prize packs from Indigo. I’ll choose the two winning responses on September 7, 2011. Here’s what’s up for grabs:

win 2 interior design books

contest interiors books BLOG win 2 interior design books
When it comes to home decor, some may not think about beautiful books as decor accessories. Let the books speak for themselves by simply displaying them on a table. They say never judge a book by its cover, but I’m just a sucker for a beautifully designed book jacket – who can deny love at first sight? Having said that, though I’ve fallen in lust with these books, I’m excited to give them to someone who will appreciate them as I do.

To enter, simply comment below with your best design tip and I will choose the best one. The style-savvy winner gets both books!

Here’s what you’re winning:

Living Traditions: Interiors by Matthew Patrick Smyth (Random House, 2011, $60).
Get an up-close look at Matthew Patrick Smyth’s aesthetic in this collection of his interior design work. Throughout the generously sized pages of perfectly styled photos, Smyth also includes his own tips and rules, particularly for overcoming the challenges of uniquely shaped layouts. In just one book you’ll be introduced to a multitude of styles and spaces in over 200 pages. Uh, yes please!

Interior Visions (Random House, 2011. $60)
Mona Hajj is renowned for her distinctive, yet harmonious use of architecture, colour, lighting, and furnishings. Her work marries classical style with contemporary influences as the book takes you through her design across the United States and into Europe. This book is inspiration just waiting to happen.

win a kitchenaid food processor!

kitchenaid blog win a kitchenaid food processor!

When I first ventured into baking (and I can sadly say I’m still venturing), I thought a blender and a food processor essentially did the same thing. Whenever a recipe called for a food processor, I didn’t have one, so I just thought, “Meh, this blender will give the same effect.” Wrong, Lauren. So very wrong.

And that, my friends, is why I’m thrilled to be giving away this top-of-the-line food processor from KitchenAid. Their Architect Series is made up of professional quality small appliances (think of the classic KichenAid stand mixer), and this 12-cup processor is no different.

To enter, leave a comment below sharing your favourite summer food (or drink!).

win a $200 gift card from posterjack!

I’ve always loved printing off my own photography and making my home a personal art gallery with my own prints hanging on the walls. However, it’s always seemed that the mainstream stores never crop it to the proper size and custom can get rather expensive.

Enter Posterjack.ca — the answer to my photo woes. This photo enlargement site has been the absolute easiest way for me to print of photos in large scale. The material options are endless as well — photo paper, canvas, peel-and-stick, custom framing or collages.

Want to know the best part, though? Besides the fact that it’s a Canadian company, Posterjack is super affordable. You can get a 24″ x 36″ print on photo paper for only $20 (even cheaper than the big box stores, who don’t do as good of a job either).

Here are a few prints I got done for my own house {keep reading to see how you can win $200 for Posterjack!}:

posterjack ashleigh win a $200 gift card from posterjack!

I took this photo of my friend Ashleigh (former Style at Home associate art director) on a weekend roadtrip to Gananoque last fall. I just love how the silhouette turned out.

posterjack hermitage win a $200 gift card from posterjack!

The photo in this image is at the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam. I was wandering around and found a quiet corridor with breathtakingly large light fixtures.

posterjack cowboys win a $200 gift card from posterjack!

I took this picture of my boyfriend when we were in Dallas a couple of years ago for the Cowboys Thanksgiving game. I figure this is a much more attractive way to show team spirit in the house than by hanging a jersey on the wall!

posterjack maastricht win a $200 gift card from posterjack!

One of my favourite photos, I took this when I was in Maastricht, Holland, for The European Fine Art Fair. I love Dutch architecture and this shot really reflects that European charm.

Now here’s the fun part — Posterjack has given us a $200 gift card to present to one lucky reader! Such an awesome prize because you could gets tons of photos printed or go big and get a mega-sized canvas.
To enter to win, just leave a comment {with an image if possible} telling me about your favourite photo you’ve ever taken {you can link to it online, as well}.

Good luck!

clean your home with cesar millan + win a swiffer prize pack

Dog hair — it has taken over my home. Unfortunately, I can’t get mad because it belongs to my adorable puppy, Wendel, who melts my heart with a single bat of his eyelashes. I brush him and I bathe him, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference — Wendel is a shedding machine.

So, you can imagine how excited I was to get a call asking if Wendel and I wanted to meet Cesar Millan to talk about achieving a clean and harmonious home with pets. Cesar has recently teamed up with Swiffer to talk about quick clean-up products and his unique approach to making pets comfortable around cleaning tools {Wendel has peed on the carpet twice when I’ve startled him with the vacuum}.

cesar milan wendel clean your home with cesar millan + win a swiffer prize pack

My dad, Cesar, myself, and the little furbaby

I had 20 minutes of one-on-one time with Cesar, which was just enough time for him to teach me the basics of making your pet comfortable while cleaning your home. Here are a few of his quick tips:

  1. Before using a new cleaning tool, leave it around for your pooch to smell and become familiar with.
  2. Stay calm while cleaning — dogs can sense frustration and will associate it with the cleaning process.
  3. Recognize that your pet is in the vicinity before reaching for your cleaning tool and face your dog while picking it up. This will reflect assertiveness on your part.

I left the meeting with a new outlook on cleaning up around a dog, and snagged a new Swiffer SweeperVac, too {it’s a-ma-zing; lightweight, quiet, and picks up all the pet hair and food crumbs}.

But here’s the best part – I’m giving away two Swiffer prize packs, which include a classic Swiffer broom, a Wet Jet and the new SweeperVac. To enter, just leave a comment below letting me know your best cleaning tip and I’ll pick my two favourites on March 18th.

Good luck and happy cleaning!
