design within reach luau lamp

luaulamp design within reach luau lampWhat do you call a lighting solution that’s portable, eco-friendly, stylish and on sale? The Luau Lamp from Design Within Reach, of course!

I’ve been researching solar accessories this week (hint hint, possibly an upcoming Tech Style column?), and while this light isn’t solar-powered, it’s still eco-friendly and just too darn awesome that I simply had to spread the love (thanks to associate design editor Brett Walther for the heads up!).

The good folks at DWR have taken this light to the next level, combining a modern design with energy-saving technology. This rechargeable-battery-powered beauty is not only wireless and portable (think outdoor summer parties), it can also be dimmed just by twisting the bottom in the palm of your hand. How cool is that?

Wait — there’s more. The impact-resistant polyethylene Luau uses energy-efficient LEDs and can light up your world for 6-10 hours when removed from its charging base.

But, WAIT. Just when you think it can’t get any better, it does. Right now, DWR is offering the Luau Lamp for a buy 1, get 1 free deal!

Amazing quality design paired with a fantastic bargain — how can you resist?

Price: $198 US each (add 2 quantities to your online  cart, and the discount will be taken off at checkout)

must have: wall calendar

calendar must have: wall calendar‘Tis the season for calendar kiosks in the mall, and whenever I pass by these booths, I’m struck by how kitschy the options are. I can get girls on the hoods of classic cars, kittens, or The Far Side. And as much as I love The Far Side, I’d never consider mounting it on my home office wall. Appointments are for journals, planners and BlackBerrys — not for guests to ogle whenever they stop by. So, what are my real options for marking the rapidly approaching days of 2009? How about the sleek Folle Wall Calendar, originally designed in 1982, and now available through Design Within Reach. The little red arrow slides across the linear steel bar to indicate the day of the month in an arresting design that’s ultra-mod, with a sprinkling of the set design of The Price is Right. Come on down to my home office!

must have: eames house bird

birdata must have: eames house birdWe’re putting the finishing touches on the February 2009 issue of STYLE AT HOME, our first-ever “Accessories”-themed issue! It’s been so much fun pulling together all the glamorous and gorgeous “smalls” that help make a house a home, but as always, there’s just not enough room in the book to share all of our faves. I’ve coveted this little guy ever since Paul Harper, managing director of Toronto’s design destination, South Hill Home, included one in the tablescape he designed for our June 2008 issue. Known as the Eames House Bird, this must-have for any mantel boasts sleek, graceful curves and a sexy black lacquer finish. Popularized by the legendary Charles and Ray Eames, the bird is the pinnacle of “haute folk”, and one of the most iconic accessories of the 20th century. A reproduction based on the original in cooperation with the Eames Family is now available through Design Within Reach!

an elegant water pitcher

Looking for a water pitcher with a built-in filter but want something with a more beautiful aesthetic than the usual stuff on the market? Look no further!

waterpitcher an elegant water pitcherDesign Within Reach offers up this sleek stunner. The Charcoal Water Pitcher uses a mix of Binchotan charcoal and stones to filter and create mineral-rich water. The charcoal works on two levels: to ensure the water is potable (not a problem if you’re using tap water in the first place!) and as a deodorizer, so your water is odour-free — useful if you live in places where the water smells of things like sulphur.

The stones and charcoal last up to six months, depending on how much you use the pitcher, and the real beauty of the system is that that afterward, they can simply be chucked into your garden — no used filters to dump into landfills. Love it!!

Each stainless-steel-and-glass pitcher comes with one charcoal-and-stone set; additional sets can be purchased separately for $25 US each.
