visit p i ‘ l o at the one of a kind christmas show & sale

The One Of A Kind Christmas Show & Sale is right around the corner. It’s happening, here in Toronto, from November 24 to December 4 at the Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place.

Another one of my favourite local independent designers, p i ’ l o, will be exhibiting this year. Heather Shaw, the designer behind p i ‘ l o, creates heirloom quality items for the home from her coach house studio in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Be sure to stop by booth P-06 to meet Heather, or make an appointment to visit her studio.

Here are some of my fave pieces from the p i ‘ l o online store

makeover monday: kitchen inspiration board

We’ve been in the house for about three and a half months now, but haven’t done too much except paint a room or two. Well, things are about to change up in here.

Mick and I (read: just me) have been on the search for backsplashes, light fixtures and dining furniture for our kitchen. While we’re still on the lookout for a great dining table, I think we’ve found the rest of the goodies for our kitchen. Below are two pictures of the kitchen as it sits today. From the builder, we upgraded the cabinets and opted for a granite countertop. We also spent a lot of upgrade money on the slate floors — we chose upgrades that would be most difficult for us to install ourselves later.

I used The Decorator’s Journal ($30) to gather all of my inspirations, product picks and room measurements. This journal is simply fab for anyone doing room makeovers on their home. You can organize per room, drawing floorplans and documenting all the measurements you need to know while shopping. Each room page includes a plastic sleeve so you can store loose paint chips, fabric samples, etc. I loved having this with me when I was out and about scouring for products for the kitchen.

Here is a collection of the items we found for our kitchen. I’m so happy with how it all comes together as a palette of grey, black and white, but with some pops of yellow — this palette is so me. Mick’s favourite colours are blue and orange — blue for the Cowboys and Maple Leafs, and orange for the Texas Longhorns. So, we’ll leave his colour choices out of this.

The best part? It’s all totally affordable. The curtain rod, black rug, marble backsplash and light fixtures are all from The Home Depot (love it), and the large mirror is from IKEA. The chairs are $100 each from West Elm, and the vintage spoons photo and silhouette plate are finds from Etsy. As for the KitchenAid mixer? That’s on my Christmas wishlist (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

I’d love to hear what you guys think! Love or hate?

kim seybert sample sale

Oh, to be in New York at Christmastime…

kimseybert kim seybert sample sale

One of my fave sources for over-the-top-glamorous tableware — Kim Seybert — is hosting a sample sale next week, and the savings are unbelievable: 40 – 60% off retail! (Savings that probably translate into the price of a plane ticket… lol) These are the table accessories that you’d normally find gracing the shelves at Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks, but priced to sell…

As my pal Tommy Smythe proclaims in our Trendspotting story in the January 2010 issue of STYLE AT HOME (on newsstands soon!), “Vive le Maximaliste!”

Here are the deets if you happen to find yourself in Manhattan next week. (In which case, I’ll happily provide you with my wish list.)

Tuesday, Dec. 8, 9AM-7PM

Wednesday, Dec. 9, 9AM – 7PM

Thursday, Dec. 10, 9AM – 7PM

blossom tableware

canadian tire tableware blossom tablewareI`m sitting at my desk daydreaming about summer (ssh! don`t tell anyone; I`m supposed to be working) and I`m thinking about those long, lazy weekend days and evenings spent out on the backyard deck during summer. What could be better? The warmth of that summer sun; conversation with friends and family; good food; and of course, a refreshing drink in hand. This tableware from Canadian Tire certainly puts me in the mood for some good summer livin`! I love the geometric shape of these high-quality melamine dishes and acrylic glasses and the pretty pattern is cheery and sophisticated. Good to know: All these pieces are top-rack dishwasher safe. You know what that means! Clean up is going to be a breeze!

Goodbye, Ultra Supper Club; hello Ultra! The radical redesign and rebranding of Toronto’s elegant eatery reestablishes Ultra as the place to see and be seen in the hip Queen & Soho neighbourhood. If you’re not distracted by playing “spot the celeb”, check out the 15 ft. tall roosters, rendered on soaring screens from iconic photographer Stephen Green-Armytage. At the hub of Ultra’s “social dining experience”, the daring Canadian designers at Castor have crafted a grand solid oak dining table that seats 24. The 25-foot behemoth also doubles as a runway! Delish madness! Would you care for a catwalk after your cocktails?
