shopping for drapery at invu

When designer Lisa Canning and I first embarked on this project to give my condo a makeover, one of the first questions she asked me was: What’s the one thing you absolutely want changed in your space?

My response: I’d love beautiful drapery.

My condo came outfitted with those standard, horrible fabric venetian blinds and in the years I’ve lived there, I haven’t gotten around to replacing them. I’ve spent many an evening redecorating in my mind, replacing those eyesores with luxurious silk curtains. Alas, I never did get around to it.

Until today. Choosing stunning, ready-made silk panels from InVu Drapery Co, Lisa has completely transformed my space. The change is unbelievable. My living room has been given an instantly glamorous, decidedly grown-up feeling and the drapery adds such a sense of style, drama and really – a sense of completion. It really pulled all the other elements in the room together.

We’re not completed yet, but we will be soon and I can’t wait to show you all the ‘after’ photos. I’m not going to reveal which drapes we went with just yet, but in the meantime, check out these photos:

This kind of packaging makes you feel good about what you’ve invested in – and if you’re like me, you’re going to want to keep the boxes to store something, anything in. They’re just that lovely.

lee jofa’s new verdmont fabric collection

It’s a crewel, crewel summer.

Sorry, Bananarama. (Or Ace of Base, if you missed the ’80s.)

To-the-trade stalwart Lee Jofa captures the essence of summer with Verdmont – a bright, bold collection of luxe linen, chintz and prints, including these to-die-for crewelwork beauties… The exotic embroidery has been popping up everywhere we look this season, and on these cushions, the contrast welt proves the perfect finishing touch!

Paying tribute to the Verdmont mansion – an early 18th century Bermuda estate – the collection reimagines some of Lee Jofa’s archival prints in very contemporary colourways. This little vignette serves as a great lesson in pairing printed florals, stripes, solids and embroidery. Hello, instant room!

Even as we move towards autumn in terms of new launches, chintz seems to be gaining momentum. These are particularly tasty examples… And that saturated, salmony wall colour makes these fancy florals anything but frumpy.

search out, reuse & remake!

The best way to be green is to reuse things. But let’s face it — sometimes you just haven’t got what you need. Secondhand stores are a fabulous source of goods, and it’s likely there’s one near you. In my neighbourhood, two great stores are Redrawn and The Elegant Garage Sale.

Redrawn specializes in draperies, rugs, cushions and linens and is a veritable treasure trove of colourful goodies (pictured above). The high-quality offerings often include items from houses such as Brunschwig & Fils and Pierre Frey, Blanquettes (super-soft blankets) from Yumi and Laurie (previously posted about on Natural Chic!) and — for die-hard greenies — an eco-friendly line of fabrics from Seattle-based O Ecotextiles.

The Elegant Garage Sale is well on its way to being made famous by Samantha Pynn, style editor of Style at Home and host of HGTV’s “Pure Design.” She features furniture finds from the store on almost every episode of her show; each piece has been made over by her team and looks absolutely incredible! Along with furniture, the store also features small accessories and artwork. As with any consignment shop, you need to go often to score real finds, and you need to look beyond a piece’s existing upholstery/colour/condition for the most part to see what it can become. But that’s the thrill of the makeover!

Happy hunting!

galbraith and paul fabric

To me, summer means Galbraith & Paul fabric. The Philadelphia-based design duo of Liz Galbraith and Ephraim Paul specialize in the art of hand-block printing — pressing carved wooden (or foam rubber) blocks coated with coloured vegetable dyes onto fabric to make patterns. It’s a thousand-year-old process that’s Galbraith & Paul have brought into the 21st century with their penchant for stunning patterns and pretty palette of over 80 colours.

Fern (above) is a new hand-block printed pattern for Spring 2009, and Birds Silhouette (below) is a new variation of my all-time favourite Galbraith & Paul fabric, Birds (a citrusy, multicoloured version of the same pattern — on linen it’s positively dreamy). Wouldn’t these make the prettiest throw pillows for the cottage?

Love the Birds Silhouette in black, too… So striking!

inexpensive window treatments

drapery inexpensive window treatmentsOK, we all know that custom-made drapery is preferable to ready-made. But let`s face it; sometimes there just isn`t the time and money to invest in the process. And if this is the case, you needn`t worry about leaving your windows (gasp!) naked, for all your neighbours to spy on your every move. Nor do you need to spend a small fortune to outfit them in stylish, pretty fabrics. Many stores now offer a wide variety of window coverings that are available at more than reasonable prices. Drapery options have come a long way and I love that there`s so much to choose from. I love these incredibly inexpensive options from Linens ‘N Things. The Bellingham Window Curtains (pictured left) are modern, featuring a contemporary stripe pattern and cost between $49.99 and $59.99. And they`re machine washable. I like that! The Moda Contempo panels (pictured right, $59.99) feature European blind-stitched hems, are dry-clean only and come in five elegant neutrals. Freshening up a room just got a whole lot easier with these inexpensive options.
