makeover monday: chair before & after

It’s finished. My ugly, orange-y pink chair has been given new life and has made its way home to me.

On Thursday, I made my way to Carrocel Restorations to pick up the chair and when they brought it out, I was floored. It was just perfect. Not only did they reupholster it in the DwellStudio fabric I chose from Robert Allen, but they also took the entire thing apart and rebuilt it with new foam and added some piping and nailhead details. Carrocel also sprayed the wood in a Benjamin Moore white as a finishing touch.

I am so beyond pleased with the work that Carrocel did and would highly recommend them to anyone looking to get a piece refinished (check out their fascinating videos on furniture restoration). The quality and attention to detail is remarkable, and they kept me updated on the chair throughout the whole process.

And now, without further ado, here is my fabulous new chair!

The 'before' shot {Purchased for only $30, the chair had a great shape but the fabric was hideous and the construction was a little worse for the wear.}

Here is the chair at Carrocel Restorations in its most deconstructed state.

Taa daa! The finished chair, sitting in my living room.

Thanks so much to Robert Allen for bringing the DwellStudio fabrics to Canada, and thanks a million to Carrocel for the immaculate job you did with the refinishing.

Carrocel was awesome in taking a ton of photos during the process, so stay tuned for when we show you a step-by-step of how they refinished my haggard ol’ chair. PLUS, you’ll get to see what was stuffed inside!
So what do you think of the final product?

stylish dog beds for your home

Anyone who knows me knows that my beagle Wendel is the apple of my eye. They also know how picky I am about the way my house looks — I’m not a fan of anything that will stick out like a sore thumb. Most dog beds and other accessories generally fall into this category, but I’m still not about to drop $1000 on a Gucci dogbed in order to keep everything pretty.

I recently came across these beds and pet accessory bags by a company called Blueblood who specialize in stylish goods for your pooch. The beds come in a variety of sizes and patterns, and you can buy just as a case or with the insert as well (starting at $76 US for a small cover). I love the bags as well ($125 US)– they’re great for storing pet toys or grooming products, or to use as an overnight bag for your dog when traveling (carry food, treats, toys, leads, etc.).

haute decor: pierre frey

Last night assistant editor Amanda Etty and I were treated to a presentation in the history of textiles – some of the finest in the world – by Patrick Frey, chairman of luxury design house Pierre Frey.

Pierre Frey boussac colection 2010 Mareva drapes1 306x460 haute decor: pierre frey

Visiting from Paris, Patrick brought with him beautiful fabrics (I’m talking the luxe of the luxe of-the-luxe), a fascinating knowledge (Marie Antoinette loved wildlife and strands of pearls in her fabrics) and undeniable French charm (I once read that if Patrick is ever away from his wife for more than two days, he sends her flowers).

Pierre Frey Collection 2010 6 306x460 haute decor: pierre frey

He brought textiles – originals! (and replicas) – that once hung in Versailles, were owned by Marie Antoinette, or now hang in the home of Givenchy. He showed us original Toile and Chinoiserie fabrics; funky prints by fashion designer JC de Castelbeck and a statement print by philosopher and peace activists, Marek and Carla Halter. And he brought along his New York-based son Pierre, named of course, after his grandfather and company namesake.

Famille haute decor: pierre frey

Quintessentially French, eclectic, and high quality, Pierre Frey the company (family-owned for 75 years!) boasts four haute brands (Pierre Frey, Braquenie, Fadini Borghi and Boussac) over 30,000 archives (dating back to the 15th century!) and a catalogue of over 7,500 gorgeous fabrics with interesting and playful prints.

Needless to say, je suis enchantée.

mae fabric wall stickers

forestcritters mae fabric wall stickers

Aren’t these wall decals supersweet? And the best thing about them is, they’re made from fabric!

Most wall decals are vinyl or PVC, which is anything but eco-friendly, so these are a great choice if you’re into being green. Since they’re made from fabric, they’re washable, plus, if you stick them up in one spot and change your mind, don’t worry — you can move them around.

They come in all sorts of themes — the ones above are Forest Critters for Boys ($75), but there are more below. They’re made by a company in Australia whose motto is Charmed, I’m Sure, and I certainly am!

galbraith and paul fabric

gpfabric galbraith and paul fabric

To me, summer means Galbraith & Paul fabric. The Philadelphia-based design duo of Liz Galbraith and Ephraim Paul specialize in the art of hand-block printing — pressing carved wooden (or foam rubber) blocks coated with coloured vegetable dyes onto fabric to make patterns. It’s a thousand-year-old process that’s Galbraith & Paul have brought into the 21st century with their penchant for stunning patterns and pretty palette of over 80 colours.

Fern (above) is a new hand-block printed pattern for Spring 2009, and Birds Silhouette (below) is a new variation of my all-time favourite Galbraith & Paul fabric, Birds (a citrusy, multicoloured version of the same pattern — on linen it’s positively dreamy). Wouldn’t these make the prettiest throw pillows for the cottage?

enduring elegance

gold cropped 01 enduring eleganceBabs has done it again. Barbara Barry’s new Enduring Elegance home fabric collection for Kravet Contract reflects her signature style – sensible, understated chic in a soothing palette –  in all its glory. I admire how Barbara constantly finds inspiration and beauty in the everyday items around her, whether it’s a pair of shears or a paperweight. And as these are contract fabrics, it means they’ll withstand the test of time – ideal for high-traffic areas in the home.
