a charming st. patrick’s day table setting

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I created a quick and easy table setting for inspiration! For the look, I simply repurposed gift wrapping paper from Paper-Source for the place-mats, then added in a succulent (already potted) from the grocery store and homemade linens from a fabric shop. Guinness beer is a must-have at any St. Patrick’s Day dinner and I also made some delicious Guinness mini-cupcakes (recipe found here) that go perfectly with the dark stout! This St. Patrick’s Day, set the table, cook up a traditional Irish meal and serve some Guinness beer and cupcakes! Cheers to the Irish!

Seriously, though – turquoise is a really hot hue that’s popping up everywhere we look, as you’ll see in my segment from yesterday’s episode of CityLine. (Watch it HERE!)

malachite accessories at decorum

I was chatting with Tommy Smythe from Sarah Richardson Design the other day, and he told me I just had to stop in at Decorum Decorative Finds to check out their malachite accessories.  (Tommy’s crazy about the colour of malachite, and his passion is highly contagious.)

Look at those whorls! The fascinating patterns on this malachite plate remind me of a whacked-out contour map. And that rich blue-green combined with the gold key motif absolutely screams luxe…

A smaller hit of malachite, but no less luxe is this little sphere on a gold dragon/fish plinth. Pure Art Deco deliciousness.

If the colour green was issued a report card, it would most certainly read, “plays well with others”.

When I was presenting a floral seminar recently, I suggested to the group that they start thinking of green as a neutral. Of course, there are different undertones to each green that make certain hues work better than others in a space, but the point I was making was that it’s much easier to “go green” (chromatically speaking) than you may have thought.

I was chatting with my good friend, IKEA Canada’s National PR specialist (and former Style At Home Associate Design Editor!) Tamara Robbins Griffith about this the other day, and found a fellow fan of this totally on-trend colourway.

“Green goes with every other hue,” Tamara says. “It integrates easily into existing decor, not just as accessories, but in larger furniture pieces as well.”

I asked Tamara to share her fave friendly greens currently in-store at IKEA, and she prepared this hot list for me, along with a few of her expert tips on how to make the most of these summery shades…

Green is, of course, more than just a colour, Tamara says — it’s also a state of mind. “Stackable chairs save storage space as well as transportation emissions,” she points out. “This makes them a more environmentally-friendly choice.”

feeling green

I`m feeling a bit green today. Not eco-friendly, do-the-environment-a-spot-of-good green. Just green. Spring arrived somewhat anticlimactically last week and hasn`t been seen since. But inside, I`m ready for it, despite the fact that outwardly, I`m still bundled up in all my winter gear. So until spring decides to come out of hiding, I`m going to think green. It`s such a bright, cheerful colour, one that evokes feelings of life and rebirth, rejuvenation and new beginnings. Here are a few things to help add a dash of green to your home:

reusable zip-top shopper

picture 1 reusable zip top shopperEverywhere you turn, it seems that going green is getting more and more stylish. As much as possible, I just say no to plastic carrier bags when I`m shopping, instead pulling out my trusty fabric bags, which I keep tucked inside my purse for such occasions. But I just love this fab new option from Danier. The 100% recyclable Reusable Zip-Top Shopper is a stylish spin on the typical reusable bag and adds a fashionable flair to being environmentally responsible. Plus, a percentage of each bag sold will be donated to Zerofootprint, an organization dedicated to helping people manage and reduce their carbon footprint.

With any purchase, the prices are $1.99 (small), $2.99 (medium), 3.99 (large). Without purchase: $5.99 (small), 7.99 (medium), 9.99 (large). For more information, visit danier.com or zerofootprint.net.

biodegradable dishwasher detergent

smartydish1 biodegradable dishwasher detergentMethod keeps impressing me with their clever products and this fall, they continue to improve with their newest addition, Smarty Dish Non-Toxic Dishwasher Detergent.

Boasting zero phosphates and zero bleach, these tablets are sized to fit the average dishwasher dispenser and come in 20-tablet packages in either Pink Grapefruit or fragrance- and dye-free Go Naked.

Our magazine’s editor, Gail Johnston Habs, tested one out for me (I don’t have a dishwasher — sigh!) and thought it did a great job — even though it was slightly large for her Miele dishwasher dispenser.

And, if you’re feeling guilty about doing the dishes using a machine, don’t: a study by the University of Bonn in Germany proved that a dishwasher is by far the most environmentally friendly way to do the dishes. Click here to check out the facts.

Available at: stores across Canada

Price: $6.50
