Tea light lantern, $4.99 each; ikea.ca.

I live for those late summer days, taking advantage of the beautiful weather until the sun goes down. For those long days spent outside until the fresh night air hits, add some mood lighting with these tea light lanterns. You can put them along your deck, around your garden or hang them from a tree. The soft glow of the tea light candles will add a relaxing ambiance while you sit back and enjoy a peaceful night outside.

What’s your blog all about?
I’d like to think that what I write about on our blog is all of the things I’d be telling my family or friends over a cup of coffee. Trying to figure out how to do trim, our latest fabric finds, the new vacuum that I bought that I want to recommend, DIY projects — we really talk about everything.
What do you do for a living?
I run an online art and stationery studio called Penny People Designs and do freelance graphic design for small businesses.
If you weren’t working in the profession you are, what would you be doing?
Had I not found my passion with running my own business/being an artist, I think I would have loved to have been an interior decorator as I feel it’s similar to what I do right now– a dash of business, with a whole lot of creativity. But, I’m extremely spatially challenged, so I think I’ll leave the profession of interior decorating to other people.
Describe your home in 6 words or less.
Young traditional.
Favourite post you’ve done?
I have a lot of favourite posts but perhaps the one I’m most proud of is our master bedroom, because it’s a perfect example of our style of decorating — splurging in some areas, saving in others. Our bed was a splurge (Colette from Crate and Barrel), while our wood dresser was found tucked away in a vintage shop and our vanity was repurposed by painting it white and adding new knobs.
Our side tables were a project we did after seeing them in the September 2008 issue of Style at Home. We immediately did them and posted about them on our Penny People Blog, and rather quickly our makeover shot went viral.
If money were no object, what one item would you buy for your home?
A piece of original art, either by Peer Christensen or David Grieve.
Where do you shop for items for your home?
From boutiques to the used furniture store down the street, we shop everywhere. But surprisingly, we do a lot of DIY projects that involve IKEA. We did a DIY bench out of IKEA cabinets {image below}, and also used cabinets as part of my DIY desk. We made a daybed/sofa out of an IKEA bed that is in Oscar’s nursery {not shown in image above}.
What song, movie or soundtrack sums up your life?
I don’t think there is a soundtrack that sums up my life, but if there was an album that I wouldn’t mind playing my whole life, it would be any classical record. No matter what a day has been life, classical music seems to slow things down for me.
What has been your fave find under $50?
Our little hippo sugar container for $2.00.

Handwoven Byholma basket in grey, $6; ikea.ca.
Photography by Stacey Brandford
Organizing a space can not only be a daunting task, but an expensive one as well. I love these $6 baskets from IKEA because they’re so versatile. You can use them to display objets (like above) or bundle small items like matches, votive candles, clothespins, etc. I’m thinking about using these in our laundry room when it’s finished — attach blank gift tags to the fronts with ribbon to label the contents of each basket.
What do you use to organize the small items in your home?
I’m still spinning after all the craziness of IDS, so I took some time to sit back and review all the amazing stuff I saw. From neon-coloured toilet paper to fireplaces with Swarovski crystals, there was something for everyone at the show.
I already mentioned how much I simply adored the colourful Style at Home booth this year, but there were a few others that took my breath away as well.
1 UpCountry
I actually gasped when I spotted this booth. With Union Jack’s everywhere (storage trunks, a sofa, wallcovering), UpCountry showed how to do Britannia right by showcasing their new collection by Timothy Oulton. Ab fab, if you ask me!

2 IKEA
The IKEA peeps took a bold step outside the box this year by showcasing a black kitchen. Although I’m a huge fan of the classic white kitchen, I like how IKEA gave the space depth with a metallic backsplash and an abundance of white paper pendants.

3 Nicole Tarasick
Over in the Studio North section of the show (where artisans across Canaada feature their forward-thinking designs), Nicole Tarasick had set up her booth showcasing her fabulous cushions. I love how she celebrates Canadiana in a fresh, modern way.

4 John Paul & Co
As I was finishing up my tour of the show, I fell upon a booth of stunning designer dishware and saw that Style at Home managing editor Tamara Robbins Griffith had done the same! Here she is chatting to the owner of John Paul & Co. about hanging the dishes on the wall to display their gorgeous bottom sides.

5 Sibling Revelry (Sarah and Theo Richardson’s space)
I know everyone has already gone bananas over the space that Sarah Richardson designed with her brother Theo, but I need to jump on the bandwagon of love. It seems like everything Sarah touches turns to gold, and this is no different — how fabulous is that photo of Summerhill station? I was able to snap a photo of Sarah and her sidekick Tommy outside the space, as well.
6 Andrew Richard Designs
During TIFF, I had the pleasure of shadowing Andrew Bockner of Andrew Richard Designs as he set up a party space, and I’ve been a huge fan since. Their booth this year at IDS was a dreamy outdoor oasis with a water feature on the wall, a cabana, and their new line of gorgeous outdoor furniture.

7 STYLEGARAGE
Canadiana seemed to be all the rage this year at IDS and I, for one, am loving it. STYLEGARAGE has long been a favourite Toronto haunt of mine for great furniture finds and I loved seeing the way they set up their booth. They accessorized the space with Canadian chic, from Nicole Tarasick’s cushions to a wall map of Canada (think back to your grade 3 classroom).
It’s safe to say this has been my favourite IDS to date! What were some of your favourite parts of the show?
xo,
Lauren

Clockwise from top left
1) Brada laptop desk, $20
2) Alve secretary in white, $249
3) Vika Amon in birch, $59
4) Besta Burs in high gloss grey, $299
…And they’ve pulled out all the stops for the 60th anniversary of the cheap chic showcase, which is now officially the biggest publication in the world, hitting 198,000,000 copies. Insane!
I’m loving the folkloric look that graces a bunch of the new merch -a reinterpretation of ethnic and global influences, loaded with embroidery and other hand-hewn details.

The star of this look, in my opinion, is the new Klippan Navestad 2-seat sofa cover ($329). This is “Trad/Rad” in a nutshell, and turns the very cool lines of the Klippan into a stunning statement piece.
For a sweet, artisanal accent, look no further than the new Birgit cushion ($20). Love those delicate embroidered flowers…
And another stunner from the Birgit line – this beautifully embroidered crisp cotton duvet cover and pillowcase set ($80/King).

Birds and botanicals flit across Krokek — Â a new upholstery option for the Skruvsta swivel armchair ($199).

You can’t go wrong with a set of three tea towels for $6 — especially when they’re as vibrant as the new Ellakajsa prints. The very definition of cheap and cheerful!
Cosy up to new Birgit throw - 100% wool, with a magic-carpet vibe courtesy of yet more decorative embroidery ($50).

And although it’s not part of the “haute folk” vibe going on here, my top fave new find from the catalogue is the rather delicious new Kivik furniture series. I’m quite taken with the Two-seat Sofa (shown here in Tranas light brown, $769)… Looks so deep and comfy!

I recently had a whack of IKEA goodies sent to me for a photoshoot, but I almost missed the shipment entirely. I’ve become so used to the iconic big blue bag that I kept ignoring this, which showed up in its place…
It’s IKEA’s brand new Varmt Rund carry bag, and it instantly made me the most popular boy at the office. (Some people have their Coach bags; others have their IKEA totes. Different strokes, and all that.) At only $2, the sunny spotted bag is perfect for lugging gear to the beach, or fresh green goodness home from the farmers’ market. Or simply pack it with you on your next trip to IKEA and look down your nose at all the boring old blue-baggers. So last season!

Affordable. Stylish. Dependable. It’s become cliche to describe IKEA in such a way.
But what about Romantic?

You’d better believe it!
The new loose-fitting Country Style Collection of slipcovers from Bemz wraps IKEA’s most popular soft furnishings in pure romance. In luxurious Belgian pre-washed linen, the slipcovers are specifically designed to fit everything from the Ektorp three-seater sofa to the Henriksdal dining chair, reinventing each one as a cottage-casual classic.
Stunning simplicity that’s perfectly suited for an easy, breezy summer update.
