30,000 sq.ft. of homesense

What a way to start the weekend! I had the opportunity to sneak a peek at the new HomeSense in Toronto this morning and I have just one word: woah.

I salivate upon approaching the doors of any HomeSense, so when I walked into the newest and largest location in Canada, my nametag should have read “Pavlov’s dog”. The store at 957 Eglinton Ave. E. has over 30,000 square feet of the fab home wares that you’ve come to love about HomeSense, all perfectly organized and beautifully displayed. I, of course, went over my shopping budget, but how could I resist? Nestled in amongst the usual pretty accessories (my weakness), there was also a huge selection of holiday decor (my ultimate weakness).

The new location doesn’t officially open until October 26th, but I’ll share a few snaps of the store and of some of my fave finds.

reflect on these: new mirrored furnishings

Whenever I think interest in mirrored furnishings is on the wane, a gorgeous new collection fires things up again.

Check out the new Andrea line from the always-gorgeous Bungalow 5: Hollywood Regency, but a bit chunkier and more substantial than what you might expect. The desk is positively dreamy, albeit utterly impractical for my home office, as one of my hands would constantly be gripping the bottle of Windex. If they ever resurrect Dynasty, I can see Joan Collins seated behind this baby, brokering billion-dollar mergers and checking her makeup at the same time. Over the top elegance!

picture 3 reflect on these: new mirrored furnishings I think I could handle the side table though. They’d be very so pretty flanking the bed as nightstands…

And then there’s the ever-innovative Jonathan Adler, whose new series of brass side tables go for the gold… Not really mirrored, per se, but polished to such a brilliant shine that the magpie in me just had to include them here. I’m blown away by those striking silhouettes! (The hourglass is my fave…)

lillian august mirrors

Forget your reflection — it’s the faboosh frames on these mirrors that are the fairest ones of all. These beauties are from the Lillian August Collection, which is a fairly recent addition to the lines carried at Oakville, Ontario’s stunning Cocoon. Extraordinary attention to traditional detail and the “instant heirloom” appeal of antique-finished gold and silver — with the occasional bit of Eglomise — elevate these mirrors to works of art.

crystal clear

Imagine if you will that money was no object. How would you decorate your home differently if you didn’t have your eye firmly fixed on your bank account? Me? My tastes are pretty simple. Clean lines, fresh bright whites, clutter-free rooms, simple patterns and pretty but inexpensive accessories. While I’m delighted by more extravagant pieces, they don’t quite fit the ol’ budget, so I’ve learned to do more with less and appreciate the beauty of simplicity — a philosophy I apply to life in general, not just my decorating tastes.

However, I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that my eyes lit up when I stumbled upon these ornate pieces from B.B. Simon. Decadent and over-the-top, their collection of home accents are beautiful and brilliant. They’re blinged to the hilt, decked out with Swarovski crystals and they have no place in my simple little condo. But this doesn’t mean I don’t love them! Each piece is so unique and original, they’ll add instant interest to your space, not to mention how they’ll up the glam factor.

Here are two of my faves from their collection: (Top to bottom: Crystal doorknobs, set of six, $160; Crystal framed mirror, $11,000, gulp.)

pretty pairs: console tables and mirrors

Making a statement in a home’s entryway is so important. It’s the first glimpse a guest has of your interior, and as such, it’s got to make an immediate impression. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to get away with something daring, as it’s a space that you don’t spend a great deal of time in, and can afford to go beyond beige without getting sick of it too quickly.

The pairing of a console table and mirror in the front hallway is a tried-and-true formula that is both practical (your last chance to check your lippy before you dash out the door, and a surface to toss your keys) and an opportunity to inject some “pretty”.

I was struck by the pretty pairings of consoles and mirrors this morning while touring the showroom of Barrymore Furniture. Their visual merchandisers have really got a handle on how to pair these two front hall furnishings without falling into the “matchy-matchy” trap. Just look at these stunning vignettes…

blog chinois pretty pairs: console tables and mirrors

I love the exotic eastern flavour achieved by pairing the glamorous gold leaf bombe chest with an artisanal painted glass mirror. The radiant metallic chest would be a perfect solution to a dark and dreary foyer.

blog purple pretty pairs: console tables and mirrorsOoh, shiny! (I’m such a magpie!) Mirrored furniture is still so hot, and against a backdrop of luscious lilac, it brings the notion of a beautiful boudoir to the front hall. I like the subtle nod to trendy chain-link in the mirror frame.

blog white pretty pairs: console tables and mirrorsStunning Chinoiserie wallpaper from Cole & Son frames the white lacquer pairing of Christopher Guy console and mirror. Gotta love those curves!

blog black pretty pairs: console tables and mirrors

A similar pairing, but in black. I like how the striped-paint treatment on the demi-lune chest redefines the traditional form of the piece.

blog art pretty pairs: console tables and mirrors

Alright, so this is a piece of art in lieu of a mirror, but the idea’s the same. The symmetry makes for a truly arresting arrangement.

style for less: spring at bouclair

bouclaircrop1 style for less: spring at bouclair

Stretching your decorating dollar has never been more important, and there are very few retailers that allow you to stretch that dollar quite like Bouclair. Bouclair’s spring look-book is a revelation for “Style For Less” hunters, like myself — light, bright and airy, and with a price tag that won’t break the bank. I’m absolutely in love with the ridiculously inexpensive glass table lamps flanking the bed. The clear glass obelisk bases are a total breath of fresh air, especially if — like me — you’re sick of those overdone lucite bubble base lamps, but still covet that look of breezy transparency. The overscale print on the duvet cover is so spring-fresh, and the symmetrically arranged mirrors are great cheap n’ chic statement pieces. Bring on Spring!

Sun mirrors, $100 each

Glass lamps, $50 each

Marigold duvet cover (double), $80

Cushions, from $17 each

Available at: Bouclair, 800-268-2524

the new mirrored furniture?

chest the new mirrored furniture?

I think deep down, everyone’s got a soft-spot for Hollywood Regency — think girlie and glamorous mirrored vanities — and the style continues to be a strong seller according to my peeps in retail. But I’m always on the lookout for what’s next, and that’s why I was so pumped to find this beauty at the CGTA this week. I like to think of it as a new direction for mirrored furniture, despite not being mirrored at all. This chest is in brushed metal, accented with leather strapping, for a look that’s refreshingly masculine — a “boy-friendly” answer to the over-the-top femininity of Hollywood glam. It reminds me of a rugged suitcase that’s been around the world a couple of times, but maintains a refined air.
