lovely people making lovely things: oxford studio tour

Got any weekend plans?

Might I suggest a road trip?

Deep in the heart of Southwestern Ontario’s bucolic countryside, Oxford County is home to a number of highly-respected artists – both emerging and widely-renowned – and this weekend just happens to be your best opportunity of the year to snatch up some of their original works at the Oxford Studio Tour.

Don’t worry – it’s not a snoozy guided museum tour. Instead, it’s a map of the studios (in and around Woodstock, Ontario – so it’s easy to access by the 401) participating in a county-wide open house that you’re free to explore at your own pace between 9 and 5 on Saturday and Sunday.

Be sure to check out one of my fave ceramic artists, Shane Norrie: an in-demand artisan whose innovative and organic designs have been featured in Style at Home, and on HGTV’s Pure Design. There’s a tangible earthiness to Shane’s pieces, not to mention they’re absolutely fascinating on a textural level.

A peek inside Shane’s studio in Ingersoll, Ontario. In the last few years, Shane’s branched out into stunning original painted artwork as well.

Love the highly textured, barnacle-like growths on this series of petite ceramic vessels… So pretty!

A fascinating form – they remind me of curiously stemmed acorns – and a metallic finish elevate these sculptures to “statement piece” status.

Another artist on my “most-coveted” list – and also a participant of the Oxford Studio Tour – is acclaimed painter Sue Goossens. Sue’s watercolours are positively dreamy representations of southwestern Ontario landscapes, with the occasional well-loved landmark in the mix, and they never fail to instantly transport me back home.

And of course, there’s the natural beauty of the area that’s sure to inspire. I took these snaps last weekend on the farm – the abundant forsythia is absolutely luminous!

search out, reuse & remake!

redrawnroom search out, reuse & remake!redrawnpillow search out, reuse & remake!

The best way to be green is to reuse things. But let’s face it — sometimes you just haven’t got what you need. Secondhand stores are a fabulous source of goods, and it’s likely there’s one near you. In my neighbourhood, two great stores are Redrawn and The Elegant Garage Sale.

Redrawn specializes in draperies, rugs, cushions and linens and is a veritable treasure trove of colourful goodies (pictured above). The high-quality offerings often include items from houses such as Brunschwig & Fils and Pierre Frey, Blanquettes (super-soft blankets) from Yumi and Laurie (previously posted about on Natural Chic!) and — for die-hard greenies — an eco-friendly line of fabrics from Seattle-based O Ecotextiles.

The Elegant Garage Sale is well on its way to being made famous by Samantha Pynn, style editor of Style at Home and host of HGTV’s “Pure Design.” She features furniture finds from the store on almost every episode of her show; each piece has been made over by her team and looks absolutely incredible! Along with furniture, the store also features small accessories and artwork. As with any consignment shop, you need to go often to score real finds, and you need to look beyond a piece’s existing upholstery/colour/condition for the most part to see what it can become. But that’s the thrill of the makeover!

Happy hunting!

Here’s our little home away from home at the Interior Design Show — the Style at Home booth as designed by superstylist Malcolm Patterson (whose gorgeous Toronto home graces our new March 2010 issue). Split down the middle (as we’re sharing the space with our sister publication, Canadian Gardening), it’s two takes on a breezy, summer dinner party. Delish!

10 questions with samantha pynn

sammy1 10 questions with samantha pynn

You know those email surveys that you fill out, and then forward to the next person?

I asked Samantha Pynn, host of HGTV’s Pure Design and Contributing Design Editor here at STYLE AT HOME to fill out my own version… Here goes!

Heels or flats? Heels!”

Favourite art? “I love so many different types of art. Sculpture, glass, painting, photos. I love Virginia Macdonald’s photography, and so many of the gorgeous paintings from Art Interiors; Lisa and Shira have a wonderful eye for talent.”

Favourite rooms? “Living and dining. I grew up in a house with an open living/dining room at the front of the house. We used that space for reading, listening to music, playing and of course dining – we were just in them all the time and I love and live in my living/dining room the most. It’s usually the most finished and gracious room in the house, and for me, the most lived-in.”

Favourite gadget? “I am a gadget reject. But I love my pink Canon camera. These days I am all about documenting life.”

Favourite neighbourhood restaurant?Fresh by Juice for Life! Is Starbucks a restaurant?”

Bag or clutch? “Big bag! I carry everything. I never know when I’m going to need a tape measure or floral snips!”

Who inspires you in interior design? “Steven Gambrel, Thom Filicia, David Overholt – former design editor at STYLE AT HOME, interior designer and my mentor. Julia Black and Malcolm Patterson — two designers who I work with and adore. We’ve been together since season one of Pure Design.”

Favourite eco-friendly decorating item? “Vintage furniture! I just pulled over and lifted a settee into the back of my hatch!”

Favourite design you’ve created? “So hard… I madeover a seventeen-year-old girl’s room last year, and I could’ve moved in!”

Favourite place in the world? “Home.”

Thanks Sam!

samantha pynn’s pure design office makeover

sam1 samantha pynns pure design office makeover

With the premiere of Pure Design’s sophomore season on HGTV on Tuesday, September 29  at 9PM, Samantha Pynn returns to the small screen to deliver another shot of sustainable style.

What can we expect from round two of Pure Design?

“Our interiors are really awesome this year,” Samantha says. “The spaces are really tailor-made for the homeowners this season, ranging from the most traditional to ultramodern.” And that “liveability” is important, she says. “They’re the ones who have to live in the space, so they have to be happy!”

I weaseled an invite down to the Pure Design Production Office to take a peek inside Samantha’s world of beautiful before-and-after transformations, only to find that her office itself was subject to the makeover maven’s magic wand.

“Before,” says Sam, “this office was really cold and the colour was wrong.” She’s hard pressed to put a name to the hue that adorned the walls — “let’s call it ‘beige’” — and the outdated office fittings were anything but inspiring. “The 1980s ‘working girl’ desk gave me the chills, and we could never find anything — it was a state of complete disorganization.”

But armed with her inimitable style — and some fantastic finds from IKEA — Samantha brought order to chaos.

BEFORE… “Very dingy and damp-feeling”

AFTER! afterdesk samantha pynns pure design office makeover

“I think you can tell this space is very ‘me’!” says Samantha.

A crisp coat of Benjamin Moore’s Dune White CC-70 set the stage for Samantha’s office refresher, and by laying down gorgeous copper-tone seagrass carpet from Carpet One Floor & Home, the room shed all vestiges of its cold, institutional vibe. A new boardroom table flanked by IKEA’s contemporary classic Tobias chairs makes for an inviting meeting space that Samantha’s reluctant to take full credit for. “Pure Design Senior Stylist Malcolm Patterson helped me design the space,” she says. “He balanced my feminine style with some midcentury modern pieces from IKEA.”

And in keeping with Samantha’s environmentally-conscious approach, the old office furnishings found new homes at other offices in the building instead of ending up on the scrapheap.

BEFORE…

windowbefore samantha pynns pure design office makeover

AFTER!

windowafter samantha pynns pure design office makeoverThe production office is home to Samantha and six of her staff, but everyone’s got ample workspace in the new layout, thanks to new desks (in actuality, four Melltorp dining tables pushed together to form one gigantic worktop), and rolling under-desk filing cabinets from IKEA. The table lamps are from IKEA as well, but Samantha customized them by mixing-and-matching the lamp base with a different shade. “It’s always good to put your own spin on a piece,” she says. “Make it your own!”

The walls are lined with Samantha’s inspiration boards, complete with tears from her favourite photos from Style At Home magazine. The boards themselves are upholstered in pretty lavender fabric from Robert Allen. “I love how the lavender works with the apple green and pink accents in the room,” she says. “I wanted it to feel like a floral arrangement come to life.”

To create privacy without sacrificing natural light, Samantha selected translucent window treatments from Hunter Douglas Canada. Below the windows, acrylic trays from IKEA ensure fabric swatches stay neat and tidy — and save time when Samantha’s hunting for a particular sample, as the clear acrylic means all swatches are visible without having to dig.

Unfinished magazine boxes and filing drawers from IKEA were painted a perky apple green — another case of Samantha putting her personal stamp on mass market merch.

Adjacent to the conference table is this sweet little lounge. I love the Karlstad sofa from IKEA in this Linneryd Natural-colour slipcover, which is paired with the Vejmon coffee table — repainted, of course, this time in Benjamin Moore’s Violet Mist CC-880. Eagle-eyed Samantha fans will recognize the pink tufted chair from her own home, featured in Style At Home back in June 2008. Pretty patterned pillows break up the solid, softly-hued upholstery and add a hint of romance.

And those gorgeous floral arrangements that are among Samantha’s trademark flourishes? “One of our producers has a beautiful cutting garden,” Samantha says. “We always have fresh flowers here at the office.”

a new season of pure design with samantha pynn

samjane1 a new season of pure design with samantha pynnGot together this weekend with Pure Design’s Samantha Pynn (left) and style at home’s new editor-in-chief Jane Francisco (right).

Sam is still a contributing style editor at style at home (until this past spring she was a design editor at the magazine), and we were chatting over coffee about her ongoing role at the mag, as well as TV, decorating, love, life, and lots of other things.

She’s very excited about the upcoming 2nd season of Pure Design, which starts airing Sept. 29 on HGTV. The show focuses on green, enviro-friendly makeovers, which make both Sam and me very, very happy!

Sam’s all about reusing what you have and sourcing eco-natural goods and, starting with the October issue, she’ll be writing a regular column for style at home about an episode from her show, the makeover featured on it and how she’ll pulled it all together.

So look for the October issue — which we’re just wrapping up now, if you can believe it! – on stands Sept. 7.

samantha samantha pynns pure design season two!

Ooh, have I got a treat in store for you…

My colleague and fave sweetie-pie Samantha Pynn has invited me down to Pure Design’s new production office! In the midst of producing the smash-hit’s sophomore season, Samantha decided that her base of operations here in Toronto needed a shot of the same chic she injects in each of her TV makeovers. I’m going to take you behind the scenes at Pure Design to show you the amazing before & after transformation of Samantha’s own office, right here on Style Sleuth… Can’t wait!

I’ll keep you posted…

In the meantime, check out Samantha’s greatest hits from Season One — you can still watch them online on HGTV!

The Christmas before last, a photographer friend gave me a stunning piece of handcrafted pottery from Ingersoll, Ontario-based artist Shane Norrie, whose work I immediately fell for. Since then, you’ve seen Shane’s work in the pages of STYLE AT HOME, and on-screen, with his appearance in Miss Samantha’s smash hit Pure Design on HGTV. There’s a tangible earthiness to Shane’s pieces, not to mention the fact that they’re absolutely fascinating on a textural level. Samantha’s even dubbed his pieces “heirlooms of the future”, and I agree wholeheartedly. Shane’s expanded his repertoire by venturing into mixed media painting, and his work is now available through Canvas Gallery in Toronto, which means there’s more Shane to share. Yay!

Check out Shane’s blog here!
