eco friendly valentine’s bouquets

bouquet eco friendly valentines bouquets
Who would have guessed that cut flowers were fraught with so many environmental concerns?? From the pesticides used to grow them, to the fungicides used to keep them from rotting, to the fact that they’re often shipped thousands of kilometres across the planet to get to you, they are so many factors in why asking a few simple questions of your florist before buying your bouquet make sense.

Are the flowers  organic or certified*? What is the certification? Do you use locally grown products where possible? Are your vases made of recycled glass?

In Vancouver, Amoda Flowers specializes in eco-friendly, sustainable, organic bouquets, and more (one of their lovely bouquets is pictured above). They also factor in the following to ensure that as many aspects of their business are as natural as possible.

  • Cellophane used for wrapping and packaging is compostable and non-GMO
  • Tissue paper is made from recycled paper
  • Ribbon is biodegradable, and coloured with soy inks
  • All printing is done on recycled or tree-free paper

So when you visit or call your florist, ask about eco-friendly flowers. More and more florists are offering them. The selection might be small, but the more people who ask, the bigger the selection will become!

Available at: www.amodaflowers.com

* If you want to know more about eco-certification for cut flowers, check out this post from Amy Stewart’s blog, Dirt By Amy Stewart. Amy is the author of Flower Confidential: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful in the Business of Flowers and really knows all there is to know about not only the environmental concerns behind the cut-flower industry, but also the gardening industry in general. Plus, her blog is just plan fun and informative! For more on Amy, check out www.amystewart.com.

recycled yarn throw

mohairthrow recycled yarn throw

Louise Campbell of Vancouver-based online site Lavish & Lime let me know about the great sale they’re having until Jan. 31 on this fabulous mohair/wool/acrylic blend throw.

I love the way the robin’s egg blue of the mohair blend throw is accented by the frivolity of the incredibly generous recycled yarn fringe in a multitude of colours. It just makes me smile!

The throw is 70″ x 53″, dry clean only and also comes in White Snow, Dark Grey and Deep Chocolate Brown.

Check out the other products Lavish & Lime has on offer, too; the site focuses on Canadian-made and eco-friendly products and has lots of lovely items.

Available at: www.lavishandlime.com or call 877-216-5463

Price: $112 (regularly $160)

win a replaceable-head toothbrush!

toothbrush win a replaceable head toothbrush!I’ve always thought it an incredible waste to throw away an entire toothbrush when just the head needed replacing and now I’ve found Radius, a company that makes two types of toothbrushes with replaceable heads.

My fave is Source, which has a handle made from 50% recycled wood fibre or flax and 50% post-consumer polypropylene. When the head needs replacing, you’re only tossing out 7% of the toothbrush as opposed to 100%. Brilliant!

So brilliant, in fact, I’m giving away three toothbrush sets (each set is valued at $13.85 US and includes one Source Toothbrush with extra replacement head, one Toothbrush Travel Case and one Silk Floss).

To win a set, add a comment on this post before Nov. 24 midnight EST listing the best thing you’ve done in your life to make it more eco-friendly and green. After the contest closes, I’ll pick what I think are the three best tips, and the people who posted those tips get the toothbrush sets shipped to them for free anywhere in Canada, excluding Quebec (see below)!

You can check out the toothbrushes, travel cases, floss and other products at Radius’s website. Right now, Radius is offering a great discount offer of 10% off to styleathome.com visitors; just use code SAH5934 (offer expires 11/17/2008).

Available at: www.radiustoothbrush.com

Open to all residents of Canada, except those in Quebec. Not open to any Transcontinental Media employees, their families, or any other persons with whom they reside.
