the best of ids12: furniture

I’m sharing the highlights from IDS12 in a series of four posts, organized by category, over the next couple of weeks. Don’t forget to check out the first two posts in this series, rounding up the best woodwork and textiles.

For today, let’s talk furniture!

1. Elte

Elte 1 the best of ids12: furniture

An old favourite, Elte’s booth was massive and beautifully furnished. My fave part of their design was how they showcased their rugs on the walls, as artwork. This gave them more presence and attention than they would have received on the floor alone because their booth was packed with people all day long.

I finally did it: a vignette inspired by my vintage Hardy Boys collection. icon wink turquoise delight on cityline

Seriously, though – turquoise is a really hot hue that’s popping up everywhere we look, as you’ll see in my segment from yesterday’s episode of CityLine. (Watch it HERE!)

Bless your bare feet with these T-shirt rugs from Talking Squid. From concerts and gym class and dad`s closet and more, when tees are too well loved to wear anymore – even to bed! – Talking Squid repurposes them into chic, soft, shag-style rugs. Since they`re soft enough to sleep in, just picture how soft the T-shirts will feel under foot!

The rugs are already available in a host of colours — from hot pink to café au lait — and sizes — from 2` x 3` to 5` x 8`. Custom orders are also welcome.

search out, reuse & remake!

The best way to be green is to reuse things. But let’s face it — sometimes you just haven’t got what you need. Secondhand stores are a fabulous source of goods, and it’s likely there’s one near you. In my neighbourhood, two great stores are Redrawn and The Elegant Garage Sale.

Redrawn specializes in draperies, rugs, cushions and linens and is a veritable treasure trove of colourful goodies (pictured above). The high-quality offerings often include items from houses such as Brunschwig & Fils and Pierre Frey, Blanquettes (super-soft blankets) from Yumi and Laurie (previously posted about on Natural Chic!) and — for die-hard greenies — an eco-friendly line of fabrics from Seattle-based O Ecotextiles.

The Elegant Garage Sale is well on its way to being made famous by Samantha Pynn, style editor of Style at Home and host of HGTV’s “Pure Design.” She features furniture finds from the store on almost every episode of her show; each piece has been made over by her team and looks absolutely incredible! Along with furniture, the store also features small accessories and artwork. As with any consignment shop, you need to go often to score real finds, and you need to look beyond a piece’s existing upholstery/colour/condition for the most part to see what it can become. But that’s the thrill of the makeover!

Happy hunting!

bev hisey hand knotted carpets

“NO WIRE HANGERS!!!”

picture 32 bev hisey hand knotted carpetsAn absolute must-have for anyone who’s ever shrieked along with Faye Dunaway in 1981′s camp classic, Toronto designer Bev Hisey’s “Mommie Dearest” carpet is equal parts luxe and irreverent. Rather like Joan Crawford, I’d imagine.

Hand-knotted wool with a fetching design of interlocking silk knotted hangers, I’d love to see this installed in a walk-in closet, as Bev herself suggests.

angela adams pillows and rugs

Bright shades and bold patterns define Angela Adams` designs and I love the way they liven up any space by adding beautiful bursts of colour. I find the geometric patterns intoxicating and somehow find myself unable to look away from the intricate designs. Below are some of my favourite products, available at angelaadams.com. From top to bottom: Munjoy pillow in Blue ($85); Pod pillow in Sprout ($85); Lulu rug in Dandelion ($54); Kelly rug in Dusk (prices vary according to size).

must have: angela adams rugs

angelarug must have: angela adams rugsWe’ve always been big fans of Angela Adams here at STYLE AT HOME. The prolific Maine-based designer is probably best known for her hand-tufted rugs, inspired by the natural beauty of the east coast. She’s just added two new designs to her portfolio, and one in particular — which Angela’s named “Betty” after her mother-in-law — is already standing out as a 2009 design classic. I’m normally not a fan of yellow, but this Honey colourway is just delicious, and the vaguely fish-scale motif is uber-trendy and makes for a wonderful transitional piece that’s super versatile.
