ids round-up: 7 favourite booths

I’m still spinning after all the craziness of IDS, so I took some time to sit back and review all the amazing stuff I saw. From neon-coloured toilet paper to fireplaces with Swarovski crystals, there was something for everyone at the show.

I already mentioned how much I simply adored the colourful Style at Home booth this year, but there were a few others that took my breath away as well.

1 UpCountry

I actually gasped when I spotted this booth. With Union Jack’s everywhere (storage trunks, a sofa, wallcovering), UpCountry showed how to do Britannia right by showcasing their new collection by Timothy Oulton. Ab fab, if you ask me!

2 IKEA
The IKEA peeps took a bold step outside the box this year by showcasing a black kitchen. Although I’m a huge fan of the classic white kitchen, I like how IKEA gave the space depth with a metallic backsplash and an abundance of white paper pendants.

3 Nicole Tarasick
Over in the Studio North section of the show (where artisans across Canaada feature their forward-thinking designs), Nicole Tarasick had set up her booth showcasing her fabulous cushions. I love how she celebrates Canadiana in a fresh, modern way.

4 John Paul & Co
As I was finishing up my tour of the show, I fell upon a booth of stunning designer dishware and saw that Style at Home managing editor Tamara Robbins Griffith had done the same! Here she is chatting to the owner of John Paul & Co. about hanging the dishes on the wall to display their gorgeous bottom sides.

5 Sibling Revelry (Sarah and Theo Richardson’s space)
I know everyone has already gone bananas over the space that Sarah Richardson designed with her brother Theo, but I need to jump on the bandwagon of love. It seems like everything Sarah touches turns to gold, and this is no different — how fabulous is that photo of Summerhill station? I was able to snap a photo of Sarah and her sidekick Tommy outside the space, as well.

6 Andrew Richard Designs
During TIFF, I had the pleasure of shadowing Andrew Bockner of Andrew Richard Designs as he set up a party space, and I’ve been a huge fan since. Their booth this year at IDS was a dreamy outdoor oasis with a water feature on the wall, a cabana, and their new line of gorgeous outdoor furniture.

7 STYLEGARAGE
Canadiana seemed to be all the rage this year at IDS and I, for one, am loving it. STYLEGARAGE has long been a favourite Toronto haunt of mine for great furniture finds and I loved seeing the way they set up their booth. They accessorized the space with Canadian chic, from Nicole Tarasick’s cushions to a wall map of Canada (think back to your grade 3 classroom).

It’s safe to say this has been my favourite IDS to date! What were some of your favourite parts of the show?

sarah richardson at the Winnipeg KBR Show

Sarah Richardson, host of HGTV’s Sarah’s House and Sarah 101, was this year’s celebrity guest at the Winnipeg Kitchen, Bath and Renovation Show (KBR). Canadian decorating and design enthusiasts are crazy for Sarah; and, rightfully so! With her amazing sense of style, excellent design tips, down to earth personality and great sense of humour – what’s not to love? Having admired Sarah’s work for many years, I was thrilled to attend her presentation on design tips for kitchen and bathroom renovations.

Naturally, Sarah was every bit as wonderful as I imagined her to be. For just over an hour, Sarah shared her go-to design tricks for creating a beautiful and functional kitchen or bathroom. A slide-show of stunning photos from Sarah’s extensive portfolio illustrated each design tip and left me dreaming of all the possibilities.

What was my favourite tip from Sarah? Save first, then splurge.

This is a concept that Sarah has embraced time and time again; and, it is a concept that has always resonated with me. I love getting creative about what sort of trade-offs can be made in a room’s design to achieve the best possible look overall. First, I think about all the ways I can save without compromising the end result of a design project. Then I know where I can afford to splurge so that the room feels finished and fabulous.

Sarah’s “save” tip #1:

Use architectural salvage pieces to customize big box store kitchen cabinets. Salvage yard stores, which can be found in most communities, are a great place to pick up old doors, trim, fixtures and other reno supplies for your home. By incorporating just a few salvage pieces, like West Elm did in this gorgeous room shot, you are sure to be on your way to creating a kitchen that is personalized and perfectly you!

I just love the warmth of the salvaged wood ceiling beams and stair rail in this minimalist style kitchen.

Sarah’s “save” tip #2:

Use installation to your advantage by choosing standard, inexpensive tiles for large surfaces. Add impact with a gorgeous accent tile for a small area, like a wall in the shower or behind the vanity. Or, if your bathroom is really tiny, consider making a bold statement with a patterned mosaic tile floor like the one in this room shot from Pottery Barn.

The playful vibe of this patterned floor adds fresh flair to an otherwise classic black and white bathroom.

malachite accessories at decorum

I was chatting with Tommy Smythe from Sarah Richardson Design the other day, and he told me I just had to stop in at Decorum Decorative Finds to check out their malachite accessories.  (Tommy’s crazy about the colour of malachite, and his passion is highly contagious.)

Look at those whorls! The fascinating patterns on this malachite plate remind me of a whacked-out contour map. And that rich blue-green combined with the gold key motif absolutely screams luxe…

A smaller hit of malachite, but no less luxe is this little sphere on a gold dragon/fish plinth. Pure Art Deco deliciousness.

new sarah richardson tonight!

sarahrichardson new sarah richardson tonight!

Yes, readers, the buzz is true. Sarah’s trading in her signature high heels for, well… Not-so-high heels.

Making its debut on HGTV tonight (YAY!), Sarah’s Cottage sees the divine Ms Richardson take Tommy and the gang on a trek through cottage country — an island 20 kilometres offshore, in fact — to tackle her very own northern getaway.

Sarah’s husband bought a bachelor shack on a tiny island off the coast of Parry Sound, Ont., a few years back, and now it’s getting the Design Inc. treatment, with more than a hint of “green” thrown in as well. The cottage will be loaded with off-the-grid goodness, including a combination of solar, wind and propane power, and other savvy design solutions. Can’t wait to see what Sarah and Tommy have in store for this summer escape!

The best news of all? Style At Home magazine has the exclusive reveal of Sarah’s Cottage coming up in the July 2009 issue! On stands in early June (although subscribers will be getting it at the end of May, you lucky ducks), it’s just one more reason to get ‘cited for summer!
