natural matters

rocky mountain21 natural matters

Rocky Mountain Soap`s savoury selection of scrubs, suds, soaks and salts are a foamy retreat from stress. With fragrances like Alpine Air, Avalanche, and Forest Fresh and all-natural ingredients from fir needles to horse chestnuts and pumpkin to spinach powder, it`s clear just how much the young family behind Rocky Mountain Soap is inspired by their mountainous Canmore, Alta., surroundings.

The company mantra, “natural matters,” means that every ingredient they use is found in nature — check out a complete list of ingredients and glossary on their website. If you`re still not convinced, owners Cam Baty and Karina Birch invite customer feedback and visits (should you be in the Rocky Mountain neighbourhood). You`re also invited to join the company`s on-property women`s run in April.

Prices: Valentines Gift Pack, $25; Cold & Flu Body Rub, $8; Alpine Air Hand & Body Wash, $14; Pumpkin Soap, $5.

fabulous wedding favours

As I ran around town this weekend doing errands and groceries, I found my gaze following after the trains of more than a few brides. It`s the height of summer, which also means it`s the height of wedding season. I love weddings and all the pretty little details but I was reminded of all the challenges that faced my friends as they prepared to walk down the aisle to say their “I dos”. There`s so much for a bride to think about: the colours, the dress, the bridesmaids` dresses, the flowers, the cake, the music, the venue, the centerpieces — it`s enough to make your head spin. And then, there were the bonbonnieres. Oh, those bonbonnieres. I`ve seen it all. My sister made (made!) rosemary infused olive oil and filled sweet little bottles (tagged and ribboned, of course) for each guest. I`ve been to a wedding where guests received Werther`s candies. It`s a tough one — weddings are an expensive endeavour under the best of circumstances and finding a small but lovely gift for guests isn`t easy. I stumbled upon myweddingfavors.com this morning and just as its name promises, it`s got an endless assortment of wedding favour ideas. My fave idea is mini soaps. Everyone needs soap, right? And when they`re presented in pretty packaging, they make a lovely gift and will look beautiful on display. Check out some of my favourites:

bethesda sunscreen soap

bethesda bethesda sunscreen soap

If you’re fair like me, any little bit of protection from the sun helps, so I was happy to find out about Bethesda’s all-natural Sunscreen Soap.

With an SPF of 10, it’s not enough on its own for me, but I like to use it to wash my hands. After all, even if I apply sunscreen to them, I wash them throughout the day, which means bye, bye sunscreen, so this soap is the perfect way to ensure they’re protected to some degree.

Plus, it’s chockful of vitamins that protect against aging and keep your skin healthy looking, too, plus gylcerin, to keep skin nice and moist!

simple human sensor soap pump

simple human border simple human sensor soap pumpEvery now and then, you find a product that you never knew you needed. And then suddenly, there it is, in all its glory and you wonder how you ever lived without it. That`s sort of how I feel about Simple Human`s sensor soap pump. We`ve all used sensor pumps in public washrooms but it never occurred to me how brilliant it would be to have one at home. Well, now that I`ve used this, I realize just how great it is. Particularly in the kitchen, this soap pump makes a lot of sense. Let`s say you`re working with raw meat and you need to wash up frequently. With this pump, you don`t need to touch a soap dispenser with your contaminated hands. Just place your hand underneath the sensor and voila! Just enough soap comes out for you to wash up. So simple, so smart.

beautylicious body products

mooka1 beautylicious body productsEnjoy the fabulousness of  Mooka, a four-month-old boutique in Montreal, and if you’re nowhere near Montreal, order their goodies online.

Their mission? To create “skin-loving, delicious-smelling and environmentally friendly soaps, balms, butters, scrubs and salts (and anything else you’d want to slather on or throw in the tub) at affordable prices.”

And they do just that, serving up the most scrumptious body care products, and I really do mean scrumptious: I had a brown paper bag with their Oats, Milk & Honey Soap, Brown Sugar Whipped Shea Body Butter, and Chocolate Lip Butter sitting by my computer, and the smell was so delicious it made me positively hungry!

The formulations are mainly vegetable-based (the few animal-based ingredients like honey, beeswax and milk are clearly listed) and boast skin-safe essential fragrance oils, so these made-by-hand products will have you doing a happy nature dance and smelling awfully good to boot. Life is short, so treat yourself well!
