makeover monday: whimsical wallcovering

Finally! It’s been a couple of months since I spotted and drooled over a certain wallpaper from York Wallcoverings, and have since made it a must-have. Awhile ago, York introduced the Walt Disney Signature Collection, which is composed of designs inspired by Walt Disney. The papers are stunning and nothing like you’d imagine when you hear the name ‘Disney’ {i.e. they don’t have Goofy or Pluto splashed all over them}. Though it was hard to choose, I went with the Illuminata paper, which was inspired by the opening of ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ from the film Fantasia. You can check out all the patterns from the collection on the York Wallcoverings website, and buy from Crown Wallpaper & Fabrics {the Canadian retailer}.

I’m new to wallcoverings — after years of living in apartments — so I eased into it by doing a small wall in the entryway of my new home. I had a bunch of errands to run on Saturday {HomeSense and lunch with a friend, natch}, so Mick was actually the one to put it up. And he did a fabulous job, might I add — he was a wallpaper virgin and now he’s a pro! Below are a few after shots; I love how it blends in with all the holiday sparkle.

So what do you think? All that’s left to do is paint the trim white {eugh, I hate you, builder’s paint}, add a pretty rug and find a showstopper mirror.

wallpaper in progress wallpaper in progressLisa and her amazing assistant Kristelle did a great job wallpapering the back feature wall in my condo. I love it! We chose Marimekko’s Lumimarja wallpaper from New Wall (pictured above) and I really love how it looks. Read more on Lisa’s blog!

The flooring installers from End of the Roll just showed up at my door, ready to finish up the job. Yesterday, they installed the new floors throughout the living room and now, just the kitchen and front foyer are left. I really can’t wait to see the whole thing completed. It’s looking amazing already.

Since they’re finished in the living room, my designer Lisa Canning (check out her website at condosbycanning.com) is ready to get the wallpaper up. Our design plan has evolved throughout this process and we’ve agreed that we love Marimekko’s Lumimarja wallpaper from New Wall (pictured above) for the front foyer and on the long back wall of the living room (behind the sofa). Hopefully the wallpaper can go up today – we have to work around the flooring guys! But as you can see, things are really starting to come together.

What are your thoughts on the wallpaper? I just returned home from a vacation that took me to Finland. While in Helsinki, I strolled through the must-visit, typically Finnish design stores like Marimekko and Iittala. I love the playful feeling in their designs and this Marimekko wallpaper is fresh and fun, without being too overwhelming for a small space. What do you think?

The latest issue of Style at Home just landed on my desk. If you subscribe, you should be getting your copy soon. If you don’t, what are you waiting for? Subscribe here! I love flipping through the magazine and checking out the pages and pages of design inspiration. The first thing that caught my eye? This gorgeous wallpaper/paint combo that jumped right off the page. This luxurious wallpaper (Baroque Papers Versailles BP 2611, $295 per roll, farrow-ball.com) paired with sun-bright yellow baseboards (Babouche 223, farrow-ball.com) is a stunning combination. And I just love the idea of painting the baseboards to match the wallpaper, instead of sticking with tried-and-true white. What do you think? Would you paint your baseboards a vibrant colour? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

amy butler’s new graham & brown wallpaper

If you haven’t already snatched up the August issue of Style at Home, you need to do so right away, if only to check out the new wallpaper I’m obsessing over on page 21… Amy Butler — she of chic sewing pattern and fabric fame — has crafted a new collection of wallpapers for Graham & Brown that is making some serious waves in the design world, and I just had to launch my “Style News” column with my fave of the many perky patterns she’s devised. But what of the others in the collection? Be prepared to drool…

Retro-fabulous! I love Amy’s fresh new take on American Midwest motifs like big, medallion-style blooms…

And those colours are absolutely breathtaking. Who said red and pink don’t play well together? Throw in a bit of creamy orange, and you’ve got a brilliant palette that still feels light and airy, thanks to the judicious use of white.

In a monochromatic green scheme, this pattern almost takes on an Art Nouveau vibe.

A vision in violet… (And no, that’s not Amy Butler, oddly enough.)

This is the only one that I’m not completely bonkers about, but I think it’s more due to the colourway than the actual pattern… And I’m a completist, so here it is!

The new Graham & Brown Amy Butler Collection is available for around $80 per roll at Crown Wallpaper + Fabric.

And now, for something a little different. Wallpaper for Windows (wallpaperforwindows.com) is a new product that adds a decorative touch to your glass windows or doors. It only takes about 20 minutes to apply to the glass and the patterns cost between $35 and $50. I have to say, I’m not a fan. But I’d love to know what you think! Love it or hate it? colour of the year: turquoise

Back in December, Pantone revealed its colour of the year for 2010. And the winner was: Turquoise! Well, we`re three months into 2010 and as we head into spring, perhaps it`s the perfect time to start thinking of ways to incorporate this colour at home. Inspired by nature from sea to sky, turquoise is known for its restful effect, representing feelings of tranquility and calm. It`s how you might feel languishing under a cloudless sky by the turquoise waters of a tropical paradise. Ahhhhh …

A vacation is one thing. But when you return home, leaving the ocean behind, you may want to recreate that sense of calm inside your own house. Turquoise home decor products abound. Check out some of my favourite wallcoverings below (visit crownwallpaper.com for more information), plus take a look at 10 more terrific turquoise home accessories that`ll inspire you to inject some cheer into your decor.

wallpaper – golden girls style!

Remember The Golden Girls?

picture 6 wallpaper golden girls style!

The set for the Miami home shared by everyone’s favourite silver-haired sirens is surely one of the iconic interiors of the ’80s — blond, cane-framed furniture, an abundance of creamy pastel pinks and turquoises, that dreamy lanai (a word that only seems to exist south of the border) and, the clincher for me, that huge-repeat banana leaf wallpaper that wrapped Blanche’s bedroom in over-the-top tropical splendour…

martinique1 wallpaper golden girls style!

Turns out the wallpaper — a pattern called Martinique — was originally commissioned for use in the Beverly Hills Hotel in the 1940s, and continues to pop up in select rooms there to this day.

I was really pleased to see Brian Atwood and superstar designer Nate Berkus use this classic pattern in the dining room of Atwood’s Milan apartment in a recent issue of Elle Decor. I admire their guts in mounting this fantastic foliage in such a large-scale application. This is an 80s throwback I could definitely live with!

As an out and proud Anglophile, I can’t tell you how much fun it was to pull together my Trendspotting column for December’s issue of Style at Home magazine.

trends brit pop wallpaperWhat I love about this particular British invasion is that the well-loved and instantly recognizable British icons are being spun in really dynamic and creative ways. There’s something deliciously irreverent about these designs, but they’re also a respectful homage to the subject matter.

That’s why I fell for the London .005 collection of wallcoverings at Crown Wallpaper

Yes – it’s the London Underground map, reinvented as an abstract wallpaper pattern! So yummy! I love that blue colourway.
