style at home makeover contest 2009by Natalie Bahadur |

I love my condo. I really do. When I first moved in, I spent so much time choosing the paint colours, furniture and accessories. The result is a warm and cozy space that I just love to spend time in. But … as the editor of a design and decorating website, I’m continually surrounded by new and exciting ideas. My mind is always whirling with just one more change I could make to my home, a tweak here, a new item there … it’s a hazard of the job, I suppose! Pictured above are rooms that totally capture my imagination. It’s a hot and sticky August here in Toronto and these interiors are light and bright and if I could, I’d makeover my home to look like these! (Photography by Gap Interiors.)

I am REALLY desperate for a overhaul in my home!I recently lost my job due to the poor economy so things are very tight financially. Yikes… and I am soon to be mother to my fifth child!!My home is very small (under 1000sq feet). I have one bathroom for 7 people with a floor that is peeling up,toilet that is leaking, bathtub taps that are falling apart not to mention the bathtub is so worn out I can no longer clean it properly. In my kitchen the dish washer has leaked causing mold to grow so the flooring had to be removed we now have a drop in the floor causing my children to trip frequently. Not to mention the exposed electrical outlets throughout the house that I am scared to death one of my children (2 under 3) will seriously hurt themselves on. I am soon going to have to use caution tape everywhere!! Only to mention a few of the issues I have with my home .. So PLEASE HELP!! I am very desperate to make my house the safe home it should be for my children. Thanks and Please Please Please Help Me!!!
I am in need of a whole home reno. We replaced the windows over a year ago and when it came time to replace the trims I did not want to replace with the existing honey oak. But alas, the whole house is trimmed in honey oak. The kitchen cabinetry is oak as well…..I feel like I am “oaking” to death in here. So my dilemma is do I gut everything and start fresh or do I work with what I have…But for a year I have had no trims..I figure indecision is better than the wrong decision!! Please, I would love some advise and I wish you could come out west and oversee the transformation!!
I feel badly posting after having read the last two entries. In all honesty, I do not have any safety issues, nor do I have mould growing in my home. I do have an older home that I have been renovating in the hopes of making it structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, my better half lost his job earlier this year, and we have not been able to make some of the changes we were hoping. Our main concern is our upstairs bathroom that the kids use. The vinyl is starting to peel, there are two holes in the wall where the towel rack should sit, the sink is green, and it’s now rusting. The tub is also green and it has lost some of the enamel. I have painted the bathroom and put up a shower curtain to hide some of its short-comings, however there’s only so much that cosmetic work can do. A makeover would be an amazing gift.
My kitchen cabinets are also in desperate need of a makeover. I have painted them and put on new knobs, we also tiled the top of the countertops. However, there is inadequate support for the weight of the dishes, and the shelves in the cupboards are now bowing. Before long, I strongly suspect that the entire cabinet will disconnect from the wall and plunge to its untimely death, breaking tiles as it goes. I would love to have the opportunity to purchase new cabinets.
Hi everyone,

I would like to nominate my Mother. She is disabled and my father walked out on her a little over two years ago for a woman three months younger then me. The house is falling apart and has mold from water damage, out dated and cracked windows, furnace is about as old as the house (built in 1900), the porch steps are falling apart, foundation leaks in basement so when it rains it floods, I could go on! My Mom is on SSI unable to work due to injuring her back in a factory, she gets $420 a month. The mortgage alone is over a thousand due to my father remortgaging it and spending all the money. Also the utilities are well just to give you an idea the gas is almost $9,000 due to my father never paying it and medical surges being used so it wouldn’t get shut off. My brother had moved in with my Mother for the first two years to pay bills but with the economy he couldn’t do it anymore. Since my brother has moved out he put everything he could in storage in case the sheriff should show to kick my Mom out due to the home more then likly going into foreclosure. So all my Mother has in her home is a beat down couch she sleeps on- a table with three chairs- TV stand with a TV she don’t watch- a microwave/coffee pot combo that’s a friends, a refrigerator- and a washer and dryer. All the rooms upstairs and in the basement are empty (except with washer & dryer). Anyhow My father refuses to divorce my Mom, help her financially, write the utility companies to switch them out of his name, all the while he is taking care of his mistress and her three boys. My Mother could get legal aid to handle the divorce but after 33 years of marriage she feels she deserves more then just him getting away with not having to pay for anything after leaving her like he has! Please help if you can we don’t expect new of anything donated from materials and time would be greatly appriciated. We are in the process of trying to save the house but with the economy and everyone having it rough we’ve put it in God’s hands. Thank you for your time.
Thanks so much for all the comments. A quick reminder: In order to be eligible for the contest, you must submit photos in the contest. Here’s the link: http://makeover2009.styleathome.com
Deadline for entries is September 24. Good luck!

Hello, the home we live in is in desperate need of a makeover. We painted the kids room and the main bedroom but have to wait another forever before we can afford more paint to do the rest of the home. I am so ashamed to bring any of my friends in because the carpet is an eye sore. Everything in our home is literally broken and for my dryer I use a wrench to turn the knob. Please help.
