Disposable dinnerware? On an eco blog? Now you’ve seen it all, right?
Previously only available in Asia and Europe, Japan’s WASARA dinnerware is finally available in North America. Strong and sturdier than its paper counterparts (not to mention far more chic), WASARA’s wares are also biodegradable and completely compostable. (That is, if you have a compost heap.) Plus, they’re made with 100% tree-free sustainable materials: sugar cane fibre, bamboo and reed pulp. Order yours in advance of spring and be pret-a-picnic!
Price: Individual pieces, from $9 US (pack of 12 small plates). Sample pack (one each of all 14 pieces) $18 US.

Green & Black’s organic chocolate goes Fair Trade and I, for one (crazy chocolate lover that I am), couldn’t be happier! The line will be converted starting this year, and Fair Trade labels will begin popping up early in 2011, with full conversion expected by the end of 2011.

Looking to have a ton of people over but don’t have enough cutlery to go around? Really don’t want to buy plastic and toss it into the garbage after knowing it’s just going to end up in a landfill?
Check out this biodegradable cutlery. Made from potato starch, it’s not only biodegradable, you can compost it, too – it completely breaks down in three to six weeks. And while the price is somewhat higher, isn’t it worth it for never having to rely on petroleum-based plastic knives, forks and spoons again?
Available at: www.grassrootsstore.com
Price: $5.99 (package of 50)

Aren’t these reusable mesh bags fabulous? Buy a few, take them with you to the grocery store for your produce and never again use those flimsy plastic bags that just get tossed in the garbage later.
They have a drawstring for easy closure, checkout clerks can see what’s in them, and they’re made in Canada of 100% washable cotton. What’s not to love?
Price: from $5 each (small)
Available: check out www.credobags.com for stores and online retailers

There’s been a lot of controversy in recent years about the safety of nonstick pans. Most experts now agree that they’re safe if you observe certain protocols while cooking, like not letting the pans get overly hot, or preheating them to too high a temperature.
Still doubtful? Check out GreenPan products! I absolutely love my frying pan and, in fact, prefer it to other nonstick pans I’ve used in the past. It boasts Thermolon nonstick coating, a new, non-PTFE* form of coating, and you really can use it without oils or butters; just follow the instructions re heating and cleaning and you’re good to go! I just have a frying pan so far, but you can get complete sets of pots and pans if you like.
