Rocky Mountain Soap’s savoury selection of scrubs, suds, soaks and salts are a foamy retreat from stress. With fragrances like Alpine Air, Avalanche, and Forest Fresh and all-natural ingredients from fir needles to horse chestnuts and pumpkin to spinach powder, it’s clear just how much the young family behind Rocky Mountain Soap is inspired by their mountainous Canmore, Alta., surroundings.
The company mantra, “natural matters,” means that every ingredient they use is found in nature – check out a complete list of ingredients and glossary on their website. If you’re still not convinced, owners Cam Baty and Karina Birch invite customer feedback and visits (should you be in the Rocky Mountain neighbourhood). You’re also invited to join the company’s on-property women’s run in April.
Prices: Valentines Gift Pack, $25; Cold & Flu Body Rub, $8; Alpine Air Hand & Body Wash, $14; Pumpkin Soap, $5.

The notebooks themselves? Entirely eco-friendly! The funky notebooks, colourfully designed by artist Carolyn Gavin, are made from 100% post-consumer waste, using vegetable-based inks and glues and biodegradable packaging. They’re also made in Canada, and at a biogas-fuelled mill.

Let’s face it: who the heck knows what methylisothiazolinone is?
It’s easy to find out if you have the Seventh Generation Label Reading Guide iPhone app. With an alphabetical index, it’s supereasy to find the ingredient you’re looking for, then discover different things about it like: What is it? What is it used for? How does it affect you? Or search for a specific term. You can also submit a product name if you can’t find it in the database, so it will be added.
And by the way, methylisothiazolinone is a synthetic preservative “typically used in detergents and hand dish soap … used to prevent microbial growth … corrosive to skin and also a skin sensitizer. Toxic to aquatic organisms….”
Available at the iTunes store.

Green & Black’s organic chocolate goes Fair Trade and I, for one (crazy chocolate lover that I am), couldn’t be happier! The line will be converted starting this year, and Fair Trade labels will begin popping up early in 2011, with full conversion expected by the end of 2011.

Want to do everything you can to save the planet? Check out a new environmentally friendly search engine named Ecosia. Each person who uses the search engine earns the company money from sponsored clicks. At least 80% of the money goes to a rain-forest protection project run by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Every new Ecosia user saves about 2,000m² (2,392yd²) each year; each search saves 1.95 m². Loving those stats! It’s easy to install and works just like any other search engine.
