getting white rightby brett |
Does the code “CC-40″ mean anything to you? Chances are, you’ve painted your ceiling and/or trim in this colour — better known as Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White — at some point over the past 20 years. The iconic warm-white was, for a very long time, the *only* white in the Canadian design community, and a staple of any design show’s “Ask An Expert” solution to your decorating dilemmas. But why this particular white, amongst the hundreds of options out there? Maria Killam, a Vancouver-based colour designer, addresses this very question in her lovely blog, “Colour Me Happy”. Check out Maria’s tips on how to get white right, and exactly when in the design process that white should be chosen.
What’s your fave white? I’d love to hear from you!

Hello,
I am in a white haze…I have chosen a paint color of SW
Versatile Gray and we have backed it out 50%..it gives us a clean fresh look but it still has a nice warmth to the color..not a blue undertone at all.
We have been living with stark white trim/doors and we have
to paint the ceiling due to some work that needed to be done
it is a textured ceiling…so now, the white…I don’t want
a start white…we are prepared to paint the whole 2800 sq foot
home..room by room and change the trim..but, I also, am afraid
of a yellow cast…I want it soft, a touch on the warm, no yellow to it and the ceiling has to be painted in oil, but,
I sure don’t want it to look yellow and be heavy and look
like it needs to be freshened up…right now I would say it
has a grey tone to it as it has not been painted since it has
been blown in 8 years ago now.
I have been told CC-40 BM paint and also, White Dove…a decorator friend suggested White Dove as it has not show yellow
once it is on the ceiling.
There are so many whites…my husband says White Dove…I believe with the SW Versatile Gray it is a warmer color…do you have a suggestions…could Cloud White we backed out to
take the cream out a bit, but, not back to white….or am I confusing myself and I should go with C017 White Dove.
THANK YOU
I appreciate your time
Linda
Hi Linda,
Thanks for your question! I took your query to the queen of design solutions, our Senior Design Editor Margot Austin, and she suggests that White Dove will be lovely with your Sherwin Williams wall colour. She’s also suggested that you might want to try the trim in White Dove as well, but in a slightly more glossy finish than the ceiling.
Hope that helps!
Brett
