Chic nautical living space
When we saw this cozy P.E.I. cottage owned by Kevin Austin, a Toronto-based antiques retailer, we were charmed by the cheery kitchen with its palette of fresh white, warm wood tones and coastal casual blues. Blue and white are, of course, the hallmarks of nautical style, and here they work alongside other familiar details, such as the porcelain sink and vintage-looking faucet, harbour-style pendant light and antique oyster tin, to create a subtle seaside theme. But it was the cheeky blue and white lobster-motif curtains – a modern influence on this classic scheme – that we couldn’t resist. This fun and friendly aesthetic was what inspired our take on the look (see next page), moving from the traditional stripes and sailcloth to an aquatic feast worthy of being called the catch of the day at a fisherman’s wharf.
