Antiques expert Judith Miller shares her tips on William Morris' elegant pieces.

"Have nothing in your houses which you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." William Morris's 1880 quotation also conjures up images of all that his company, Morris & Co., embodied—furnishings created with care, patterns designed with an exacting eye, and tapestries that remained loyal to their traditional roots. Founding his company on the principles of craftsmanship and responsibility, artists handled projects like stained-glass windows and damasks from the first nugget of inspiration to production for sale to eager homeowners. This intricately detailed 1880s mahogany silkwork panelled screen, likely conceived by prodigious designer J. H. Dearle, retains its lasting Arts and Crafts appeal with patterns true to nature and colours that work vibrantly with each other. A draft screen meant to be placed in front of fireplaces and doors to keep out cool air, these days we appreciate the structure for the privacy it allows.
