A guide to green spring-cleaning

By
Daniela Payne

Usher in the new season with the know-how to get your house spic and span during your annual spring clean ... and still remain loyal to the environment!

Kitchen
SAH: How do you recommend getting grease off of stove tops, backsplashes and stainless steel appliances?

JH: Use a micro-fibre cloth and an all-purpose natural cleaning product.

SAH: What is the dirtiest spot in the kitchen and how can we clean it?

JH:
The sink drain! There are always coffee and tea stain in the drain because it’s a hard place to get at. Use a toothbrush so you can reach down and give it a good scrub. Also, thoroughly clean your toaster and remember to open up the bottom tray. And check for removable knobs on appliances and cupboards. Take them off and using a micro fibre cloth wrapped around a spoon clean all the grooves thoroughly. Make sure that you put the knob back in its proper place.

SAH: Any other tips to keep or kitchens eco-friendly?

JH: Look for items that can be replaced with more environmentally-friendly choices. Look for natural and biodegradable dish soap and all-purpose cleaner. Replace paper towel with dish cloths that can be washed and reused.

Living room
SAH: Should you follow a certain structure when cleaning the living room?

JH:
Always start at the top of the room. Lightly spray some all-purpose, eco-friendly cleaner on a duster to help pick up the dust. Don’t forget to dust the light fixtures and tops of doors. Once you’ve finished dusting you can start vacuuming and mopping.

SAH: How do you recommend cleaning upholstery?

JH:
Look for environmentally-friendly solutions for upholstery cleaning. If the cushion covers are removable, use a biodegradable laundry detergent and follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions. You can also look for a professional upholstery cleaner who specializes in natural cleaning products. Put pillows in the sun to freshen them up.

SAH: What’s the best way to clean silver and precious knick knacks?

JH:
Use a micro-fibre cloth and an all-purpose cleaner. They won’t scratch.
