Sam's green DIY tips

  • Transform a wooden bed frame with no-VOC paint. Latex paint is a must, because kids touch (and even lick!) everything. Spray painting with no-VOC paint leaves a nice chalky finish.
  • Don't demolish old window frames. Instead, replace drafty windows with insulated Jeld-Wen vinyl inserts -- without disturbing original trims and sills. The energy efficient inserts have a low E coating, which filters UVA rays to protect furniture and walls from sun.
  • Don't send tired looking wicker to the landfill -- paint can completely rejuvenate it. Working outdoors, clean the surface with a wire brush. Apply a coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer so paint will adhere. Paint by hand or use a low-VOC spray paint (you'll get better coverage faster). If you want a hard-as-nails finish, spray with highgloss latex.
