S@H: Are living walls DIY-able?
HL: Small standalone living wall kits can be quite easy to install, as they just require planting. Larger walls, especially customized walls, will require much more work. It’s better to hire a professional for those because they require more planning, for example: installing water supply lines (otherwise too much time will be wasted with manual watering), and mounting the system properly onto the wall surfaces.
S@H: What lighting conditions do these indoor plants need?
HL: Typically, natural light is preferred. However, if this isn’t possible, plant selections can be made to work with the existing light conditions.
S@H: What plants do you recommend for indoor green walls?
HL: A lot of clients like prayer plants, which have leaves that look like praying hands. Personally, I'm fan of crotons because they come in a number of varieties and rich colours like red and yellow. They highlight the walls and add dimension to the walls.
S@H: Are living walls high maintenance? And how long will a planting last?
HL: Living walls are like any garden, except vertical, so it all depends on the plants, their environment and how well they’re maintained (and how often the owner sings to them!) – but most plants last quite long.
S@H: Finally, how much will a professionally installed living wall set you back?
HL: Every job is different. It varies not only by size but also by the design of the wall, the mix of plants, the complexity of the project and other factors.
A small custom job can start at as low as $1000, but larges ones can surpass tens of thousands of dollars.
