LG Electronics Canada public affairs manager Frank Lee has been in the electronics business for nine years. He’s a regular guest on programs like CityLine, Breakfast Television and Global News, offering insight into developments at LG Electronics and Canadian technology trends. Here, Frank talks about the growing importance of steam in home products.

Style at Home: What's so special about steam technology?
Frank Lee: Steam has a unique ability to sanitize with very little use of water or energy, as steam molecules are hotter, smaller and more active. Just look at how many of us hang garments in hotel bathrooms while running a hot shower. We believe that it will help freshen clothes and minimize wrinkles – and it does.

S@H: LG Electronics specializes in steam washers and dryers. Why do these appliances cost more than regular ones?
FL: Quite simply, their performance is better. Clothes are 20% cleaner than with regular washers, and the steam is gentler on your garments, thus ensuring they last longer. Our LG SteamWashers are also EnergyStar rated, so you save more on your hydro and water bills. Plus, being able to refresh your clothes with steam technology cuts down on dry-cleaning bills. You'll
pay a larger sum upfront, but you'll save money in the long run.

S@H: Are there any other environmental benefits?
FL: Steam is a way of cleaning naturally, without harsh chemicals. It reduces water usage in washers and dishwashers; for instance, using a front-load steam washer can decrease water usage by as much as 2,000 gallons per year!

S@H: Cooking with steam has always been popular. Are there any new innovations?
FL: There's one steam microwave available that allows you to conveniently steam veggies and seafood. Steam is produced by water heated by a platter exposed to the microwaves, and the food is covered by a dome to maintain moisture and flavour.

S@H: Is steam technology a fad or a long-term thing?
FL: As we place greater importance on the environment, we'll see further use of smart innovations in electronics and appliances. Steam technology is a way to take advantage of Mother Nature's strengths and employ them in our everyday lives.
