Cottage style: Outdoor showers

If the thought of an outdoor shower only brings to mind a 1970s commercial for Irish Spring, it's time to take another look. One of the hottest home accessories around, outdoor showers have found their niche as ideal spots to rinse off after a dip in the lake, cool down after tending the garden, bathe the dog or have the kids clean their nature-walk finds.

First to consider when planning an outdoor shower is what you'll be using it for. If it's just to quickly douse sandy feet or seashells, you won't need all the bells and whistles, but a detachable shower head is a good idea. If you plan to stand under the spray for any length of time, consider the current capacity of your hot-water system, and whether you'll need to upgrade it. Likewise, take into account the drainage in your chosen spot, lighting requirements and privacy issues. Pressure-treated lumber and enamel deck paints are perfect to withstand mould and mildew, sun and dirt, and—a must in Canada—make sure to take steps to protect the pipes and fixtures in the winter.

Decorate with a cabana-striped curtain, flip-flops for guests, fluffy towels on a farmhouse chair and lots of hooks. Stock your shower with eco-friendly soaps and shampoos and you're ready to let nature call.
