The key to creating this kind of drama at a
holiday dinner party is surprisingly guileless: just don’t stray from your existing decor. When you commit to a particular palette, you’ll be astonished by how much you can experiment amping up a room. Glitter? Bring it on. Asian-inspired accents for the holidays? No problem! A black feather

1 Work with what you got
When you stick to a theme, you can’t overdo it. An array of accessories works effortlessly in this dining room because the black and gold hues match the existing palette. The gold (in the tableware, on the tree and in the accents) plays off what’s already there (the pattern in the wallpaper, the mirrors and the rug). And the diva of the room – an über-glamorous black feather Christmas tree dripping in gold – oozes drama.

Hits of glitz awaken an otherwise elegant but demure place setting. Gold chargers and flamboyant flatware suit this decadent palette, while store-bought crackers get punched up with craft-store flourishes that also echo the theme.

4 Gild the orchid
The Asian-fan-motif wallpaper inspired this modern, exotic centrepiece. Yellow orchids – spray-painted with gold floral paint and placed in black bud vases – match the golden yellow candles and drinking glasses on the table. In muted black, the sequined runner doesn’t overpower the display. Choose any flower that matches your decor theme (calla lilies for traditional and mums for modern) and spray-paint them metallic in one of your colours.

There’s not one staid element in this Mad Men-meets-Tom Ford holiday bar with a nod to Asia. Martini glasses on a gilded mirrored tray set the scene. An oversized candle holder filled with gold and black ornaments provides a polished punch. The orchid (we left this one unpainted) is an exception to the black-and-gold rule (if you make one statement, make it count).
