Modern spring table settings

By swapping just a few decor accessories, contributing design editor Christine Hanlon takes a modern approach to the classic spring table setting and transforms it for three different occasions. If you want to be the host with the most this season, check out her no-fail formula for creating the perfect spring settings.

Lunch is served

A refreshing palette of kelly green and white sets the scene for this modern yet whimsical luncheon table. Subtle touches, such as the tableware’s green foliage motif and the black polka-dot ribbon wrapped around the napkins, combined with the sparkle and shine of dotted stemware and a quirky centrepiece keep the setting lighthearted and fun.

Why this works
Spring table settings should look elegant but feel casual, so start with a blank canvas (white tablecloth, white napkins and simple china) and add personality with home decor accessories. Choose your two main colours, then incorporate an accent colour through embellishments that tie in with other elements in the room. Finish with a unique centrepiece for a fresh tablescape.

Afternoon tea
Afternoon tea is traditionally daintier than lunch, so your table setting should follow suit. Replace dinner plates with salad or dessert plates and switch the bold black accents for softer decor accessories. Pink placemats and ribbons mingle fluidly with the playful bird-cage centrepiece.

Cocktail party
The subtle shimmer of silver contrasted with black creates a more refined look for afternoon summer cocktails. Etched champagne flutes reflect light and combine nicely with silver chargers. Fanciful centrepieces are replaced with sophisticated lanterns, while green chinoiserie paper adds a quirky graphic element.
