ids12: 5 must-see exhibits

By: Elaine Song
At the IDS12 preview yesterday, we were given a sneak peek at what IDS Toronto has in store this year. There's SO much to see and from the quick glimpse I saw yesterday it's worth the time to check out each exhibit! I'll admit I didn't get a chance to see everything, being on a time limit and spaces still being constructed, but here are 5 must-see exhibits to get you started at the show: 1 Ice sculptures Starting before you even step inside the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, you can witness iconic design frozen in time - literally. 2 Offsite/Onsite Check out the 10,000-square-foot space featuring the work of established and emerging designers. It feels like a behind-the-scenes look at the artists and the concepts for their designs. Patty Johnson (shown above), for example, showcases products and designs from Haiti as part of her Brand Aid Project with the country. This is easily one of my favourite spaces! 3 The boathouse This was still under a lot of construction when I saw it, but the concept made me anxious to see it completed! Rhed Corporation has created a Canadian version of a boathouse - boat and all! The boat in the picture is a replica of the actual boat they're designing, which will be all wood on the bottom and stainless steel on top. This jet propulsion, high powered boat will generate electricity as it scoots around the water. At the end of the day, the boat is plugged into the boathouse and the electricity then powers the home . 4 How do you live? Seven designers create great, contemporary living spaces that challenge the traditional ideas of how you live. Mason's space (shown above) transforms the function and space of bathroom and kitchen designs based on "primitive rituals". They combine the use of water and heat to represent the concept of cleansing and cooking. And yes, there is a toilet next to the dining table. 5 Piero Lissoni Meet the first International Guest of Honour at IDS. Piero Lissoni, Lissoni Associati, is one of Italy's most accomplished designer-architects, spending nearly 20 years designing everything from homes to yachts to hotels to furniture. At this year's Interior Design Show, he has created a 1,200-square-foot space that is utterly beautiful, chic, serene and perfectly styled. Have you ever been to the Interior Design Show?
