We traded in baby pink for mature rose and created a lovely little lady’s room on budgets befitting Cinderella before and after she met her prince.
Sugar and spice...and everything nice. That’s what we girls are made of on the inside (fact). And on the outside? We’re all about covering ourselves in the prettiest hues possible – which, when we were young and impressionable, were the pinks of the My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Jem and Barbie dolls we collected.
Our little girl is growing up – time to switch out her crib for that first big-girl bed. Here, we traded in baby pink for mature rose and created a lovely little lady’s room on budgets befitting Cinderella before and after she met her prince.

Create a room like this no matter the budget with a few simple design tips:
1. Go with a white dresser to make colours pop
Plain-looking furnishings are often the secret to success when it comes to decorating. Let your decor do the talking and choose this sweet-but-simple vanity style dresser that will stay classic as your little girl grows up.
Low: Three-drawer dresser
1 Three-drawer Hemnes dresser in White, IKEA, $149. Lindsdal knobs, IKEA, $8 (per pack of 2).
2 White mirror, Bouclair Home, $70.
3 Glass vase, HomeSense, $19.
4 Canvas tote, HomeSense, $17.
5 Polka-dot gift wrap, HomeSense, $4 (per roll).
2. Add pretty essentials
Now it's time to make the room looked lived-in. Your princess could use a pink tutu for dress-up, coordinating nail polish, and a set of fluffy towels for bath time. Choose high or low prices to achieve the decorating look you prefer.
High: Decor accessories
1 Tulip tutu, Elte, $55.
2 Essie nail polishes in Watermelon and Cute as a Button, Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, $10 each.
3 Lacoste Crocod’il hand towels , Hudson's Bay, $22 each. Washcloths in Fandango Pink, Hudson's Bay, $14 each. Barr-Co. wrapped soap, Anthropologie, $8 USD.
Low: Decor accessories
1 Joe Fresh nail polishes in Fuchsia and Candy, Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, $4 each.
2 Pink hand towels, HomeSense, $8 each. Pink washcloths, HomeSense, $4 each. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps wrapped soap in Rose, Whole Foods Market, $5.
3 Rose tutu in Pink, Elte, $10.
3. Create layers of beautiful bedding
Sleeping Beauty or perhaps The Princess and the Pea is a better reference here. After all, the fairy tale taught us that more bedding is always better. Here, layers upon layers of bed linens in different patterns and textures impart a luxe look befitting even the most particular of princesses (and could provide cushioning from even the peskiest of peas).
1 A floor pillow serves as an excellent oversized toss cushion on a small twin bed.
2 This subtle cross-hatch pattern is small and delicate and reads as a solid from afar.
3 A fitted sheet in a bold solid colour grounds the layers.
4 Embroidered detailing elevates the bedding from everyday to elegant.
5 A nice, nubbly waffle blanket lends a warm, textured touch.
6 Scrolling vines on this plush duvet cover add a carefree air.
4. Accessorize with framed artwork
You may not have the budget for a beautiful one-of-a-kind painting, but that doesn’t exclude you from the world of art altogether. The gorgeous painting by Toronto artist Madeleine Lamont for our high look (shown above) inspired us to search through old books and vintage online prints (like Vintage Printable) for our low version.
1 HIGH: Framed Floral Series artwork by Madeleine Lamont (photo above), Art Interiors, $1,485.
2 Painted jacaranda wood Donut side table in White, Snob, $795. Ribba
3 LOW: Ribba frame in White (not shown), 23" x 16", IKEA, $15.
5. Pick a cute ruffled quilt
A soft pink ruffled quilt is the big-girl blankie your daughter needs. Youthful and girlie, soft and subdued, the pinks picked here will complement your little one’s maturing palette, even when that promise to stay true to pink fades to a love of decorating with greys.
