holiday: visit to the christmas tree farm part 2

By: Erin McLaughlin

In a post earlier this week I wrote how my family and I traveled to Clembrook Christmas Farm to cut down a tree. We ended up finding a Frasier Fir that was the perfect combination of natural beauty with a little bit of "Charlie Brown tree" thrown in. But when my husband saw the 11-foot high Christmas tree of his dreams I knew we would be coming home with two trees. When he found this beauty, it was love at first sight. (no, that's not my husband in the picture, my husband was actually taking this photo that's on the blog).

20131220-171511.jpg For anyone who has bought a huge Christmas tree they know that the most difficult part is getting it home. Delivering the 5-foot tree was no problem: we shoved it in the back of our Honda Pilot. But the huge tree needed to be tied to the roof.

20131220-171840.jpg My husband - a physician - used surgical knots (he says that they are repeated reef knots) to tie down the tree and soon the roof rack of our car looked like it was covered in surgical stitches.

20131220-172134.jpg Needless to say, when we drove off the tree lot there was absolutely no chance that we would lose the tree on the highway. When we finally got home I let my husband put up the tree in his own systematic (in other words, odd) fashion. The most important thing for our marriage at this delicate stage is to walk away. And voilà! When I came back into the room, this is what I found.

20131220-172609.jpg Once the Frasier Fir was put up, ownership reverted back to me. My husband bowed out while I decorated with my favorite assortment of silver and gold ornaments. I hung ornaments to the dulcet tunes of Leonard Cohen while the kids did homework. When I was done, I stood back and looked at the final result. Magnificent don't you think?
