Interior: All in the mix

Style at Home contributing design editor Samantha Pynn understands the value of pushing boundaries. On her one-hour HGTV special, The Mix, Samantha pairs graphic patterns with animal prints, antique chairs with sofas from big-box stores, and a must-have splurge piece with a room full of stylish, cheaper finds. On paper, the pairings seem as wrong together as the The Odd Couple’s Oscar and Felix, but layered in a room, the look is packed with personality.

“When I was asked to decorate the barren living/dining/kitchen area of a 1,480-square-foot model condo, I wanted to do something completely different to make the space pop for prospective buyers,” says Samantha. “I usually go for a girly aesthetic, but this time I went for a look that would appeal to everyone. Using a combination of decorating styles seemed like the best choice. And for the first time, I didn’t use lavender or pink, opting instead for saturated gender-neutral colours.”

An open-concept condo
Light pours into the open-concept condo. Lush drapes offer privacy while adding structure and colour. Mix-plates-70.jpg
Bold dishware
Graphic-patterned dishware is in line with the bold hits of saturated colour throughout the space and adds an edgy touch. Mix-70-dining.jpg
A harmonious space
A large wooden oval dining table is a nice counterpoint to the adjacent kitchen island. Usually condo living means choosing size-appropriate pieces, and although small-space tips and tricks were used – such as selecting this oval dining table for easier access and turning a wasted kitchen nook into a multi-purpose home office/breakfast area – tiny design rules didn’t apply. Most pieces are full size and make the space feel grand. Mix-kitchen.jpg
An inviting kitchen
Painting the peachy-toned pickled-wood cabinetry grey and adding new square knobs was a small change with huge impact. Mix-chair.jpg
Cozy corner
The IKEA loveseat marries well with the eclectic melange of caned chairs and a marble-topped table with a branch-shaped base. Mix-74.jpg
A gathering place
The graphic rug is the statement piece in the living room. The neutral grey sofa and armchairs balance the look. Mix-76.jpg
Colourful artwork
Leaning artwork on bookshelves makes for a casual yet chic display, especially when surrounded by colourful objets. Mix-last.jpg
Fresh blossoms
The living room is brought to life with a Samantha Pynn classic – a tall arrangement of delicate, blossoming branches.
