Interior: Decorating for Hanukkah

Hannukah displays In a nod to her multicultural roots, homeowner and stylist Beth Gold mixes iconic Hanukkah elements with Christmas traditions by suspending wooden hanukkiahs and Star of David from pretty ribbon. Beth pinned them to her shelving unit, but hanging them in a window brings seasonal spirit to any room, and adding them to chair backs at the table makes for fanciful dining decor.

Star of David wreath Bringing greens indoors during winter is an easy, elegant way to freshen up a room. Boxwood in the shape of the Star of David plays on the familiar Christmas wreath while providing a striking focal point for the room. As a bonus, boxwood will last through the eight days of the holiday and beyond.

Beautiful lights Families gather to add a candle each night to the hanukkiah. Prized possessions, hanukkiahs hold a place of honour on shelves and tables. In Beth's home, hanukkiah's from her mother-in-law sit together on a small table; the magestic silhouettes and fabulous patina greet visitors as soon as they arrive. hannukah-dreidl.jpg
Dreidels The spinning tops that come in all shapes, sizes and colours are the playing pieces for a beloved game during Hanukkah. Hebrew letters on each side symbolize words that translate to "A great miracle happened there." Stack dreidels in a glass container to provide a splash of colour and interest -- not to mention a great distraction for kids during party prep time. Beth received some of these wooden treasures as gifts; others were passed down from her mother-in-law.

Hanukkah meal A table laden with food takes centre stage at any family gathering, particularly when centuries of tradition come along with the meal. For Hanukkah, potato latkes are a must -- fried in oil, they're representative of the miracle of the holiday. Sweet braided challah (egg bread) is made for festive occasions to bring forth joy and happiness.
