Interior: Glamorous modern nursery

I wish I could be one of those people who happily waits until delivery day to find out the gender of her bundle of joy. But, being the design-obsessed gal that I am, putting together a gender-neutral room has always seemed as appealing as a trip to the dentist. With all my children, it’s only taken the ultrasound tech saying those three magical words – “it’s a...” – to officially start my nursery decor schemes. And I have to say, most of said plans inevitably veered off into a maximalist, more-is-more direction – that is, until I found myself expecting my third child just over a year ago.

Once we knew our newest addition to the family was a boy, I madly started compiling inspiration. I went from wanting wallpaper plastered everywhere to a James Bond mural on one wall to an Old Hollywood theme to just about everything in between. But one day and many mood boards later, something unexpected happened: My mind started to dance toward thoughts of more simple designs. I found myself yearning for a room that was modern but still layered, delicate but with a restrained dose of drama. It wasn’t long after that that a very clear vision of the look I wanted was born. The nursery was to be sweet and sophisticated – perfectly fit for a baby but not age specific – and, most importantly, white, soft and pure.

The cozy tufted daybed – Christine’s favourite spot to hang out with her sweet baby boy – is made even softer with a collection of mismatched toss cushions and stuffed animals. interior-modern-nursery-crib.jpg
Classic crib
Christine loves the fact that she’s been able to use the same crib, a nursery essential, with all her three children. “Its clean lines and white finish make it a very flexible piece that can easily work in any design plan,” she explains. interior-modern-nursery-dresser.jpg
One-of-a-kind decor accessories
Big box store items and one-of-a-kind pieces are at play in the nursery. “This IKEA dresser can’t be beat for its sleekness and practicality,” says Christine. It handily stores clothes, blankets and diaper supplies, and the change pad on top can easily be removed down the road. The wall above the dresser is adorned with a set of three hand-drawn dot prints that spell out Jasper’s initials. interior-modern-nursery-light.jpg
Large pendant light
Christine has been a long-time fan of this Hicks pendant light and loves how its diffused light illuminates the room. Although the pendant light is large and dramatic like the sconces, it’s not overpowering. interior-modern-nursery-paints.jpg
