A: The biggest mistake people make is that often, they take their favourite colour and add it to their home by painting out an entire room. Just because you like a colour doesn’t mean that it will necessarily work in your space.
When choosing the right colour for your home, there are a few key factors to take into consideration: light, function and mood. Make sure to get samples of the colours that you want to use and do a test patch to see how they look at different times of the day, and ultimately before you start painting, make sure you love it.
Q: What colours are hot for accessories right now?
A: With the growing trend of “eco-chic” design, we’re seeing a lot of green, blonde, brown and grey tones in accessories. Natural materials provide a great variety of hues and texture, seen in wood grains and stone. Another hot trend is translucency, where subtle colour washes are used to tint glassware and other decorative elements.
7 tips for incorporating colour into your home
If you can’t commit to a paint colour, Cheryl says to try these easy ways to add some excitement to your space:
• Choose a colourful patterned fabric to transform a window with gorgeous curtain panels or add decorative cushions to your existing sofa.
• Add a collection of bright vases to transform your boring coffee table into a magnificent tablescape.
• Splurge on a great piece of artwork that explodes with colour or spray paint your existing picture frames for a quick and easy pop.
• For big impact, add a dramatic wallpaper pattern on one feature wall.
• If it's the kitchen you're hoping to brighten up, consider a vibrant backsplash. It's amazing how this addition can bring new life to your existing cabinetry.
• Remember to take your time when experimenting with colour. If you make a mistake, you can always change it.
• Don't rush out looking for the hottest colour trend. Look at trends for inspiration not dictation. Consider a colour that has staying power, one that works in your space for more than just a season.
