DIY project: Chain gain

Unleash your inner artiste by splashing paint on a canvas (here’s a chance to reinforce your room’s palette), then channel your inner gallery owner by displaying it in a fresh new way. A handful of hardware store basics and some gold spray paint amount to a simple DIY project that feels stylish enough for a soho art studio.

Materials

  • Canvas
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Gold spray paint
  • 4"-long metal chain
  • Wooden knob
  • Metal cup hook
  • 2" machine screw
  • Hacksaw
  • Pencil
  • Plug
  • Pliers

Directions

1 Get creative and paint a blank canvas with acrylic paint; let dry.

2 Spray-paint the chain, knob and cup hook gold; let dry.

3 Screw the cup hook into the top centre of the canvas frame.

4 Cut off the head of the screw using a hacksaw.

5 Mark the spot on the wall where you want to hang the art. Then mark 4" above that point for the knob’s placement.

6
Install the plug into the mark for the knob on the wall. Twist the cut end of the screw halfway into the plug using pliers, making sure not to damage the threads.

7
Slip one end of the chain onto the exposed part of the screw.

8 Twist the knob onto the screw.

9
Slip the cup hook into the other end of the chain to hang.
