DIY project: Upholstered headboard

Style at Home managing editor and resident crafter Catherine Therrien shows you how to transform a headboard using a bedsheet and some belts.

Love the relaxed aesthetic of this headboard? Well, it's easy to achieve. For this issue's project, managing editor and resident crafter Catherine Therrien updated an upholstered headboard by cladding it in a soft green flat bedsheet. She fastened it using camel-coloured leather belts and brass grommets for a rugged, unfinished feel that speaks to the casual look.

Instructions

1 Start with an ironed, clean flat bedsheet that's the same size as your headboard. Fold the sheet in half widthwise, ensuring the ends match up perfectly, and lay it on a flat surface.

2 To determine the length of the leather straps, measure the depth of your headboard and add 8" (4" for the front and 4" for the back).

3 Using scissors, cut the buckles and ends with holes off the belts. Then cut each of the belts to the appropriate length (we used 3 straps for each side of our headboard, but you may need more, depending on your headboard's height).

4 Using the back of a grommet and a marker, draw a circle on either end of each leather strap.

5 Cut out the circles by placing each end of the leather straps onto the scrap piece of wood and drilling through the circle you've drawn. Trim off any excess with scissors. Set aside.

6 Starting with the left side of the sheet, measure 6" from the top folded edge and 4" from the finished edge. Mark this point using the method in step 4. Then measure 6" down from this point and 4" from the finished edge and mark. Repeat as required, including on the right side.

7 Flip the sheet over and repeat step 6.

8 Using scissors, cut out all of the circles.

9 Starting with the left front side of the sheet, attach one end of one strap to the first cut-out circle on the sheet, using a grommet and the grommet tool.

10 Attach the other end of the strap to the cut-out circle directly opposite on the back side of the sheet. Repeat as required, including on the right side.

11 Slide the finished cover over your headboard.
