How-to: Holiday wrapping

By: Amanda Etty
What's stylist Lara McGraw's inspiration for this year's Christmas wrapping? The '80s! "Let's give the holidays a little funk," says Lara, who boldly dressed up plain white boxes in four fluorescent hues reminiscent of the neons she wore in grade school. With the aid of scissors, an always-dependable glue gun and loads of textured trimmings in this playful colour scheme, Lara made Christmas magic. You can do it too: choose a bright, bold palette, and have some fun!

Serene green
Refreshing and peaceful, green is easy on the eyes. Choose simple accessories - thin and sheer ribbons, soft feathers and small sparkly beads are enough to dazzle.

Tip: Use a glue gun to hold trimmings in place and ribbons in straight lines.

Out of the blue
Electric, dynamic and dramatic - this bright blue is an engaging colour that expresses exhiliration. Glittery ribbon, cute polka-dots and a sparkly monogram are funky details that add cheeky interest and personality.

Tip: For a unique spin on a traditional gift card, creatively monogram gifts with scrapbooking initials.

Tickled pink
Feminine, flirtatious and full of charm, pink encourages friendliness. We love these sweet cream soda touches: fluffy feather pompoms, sparkly beads, chunky ribbon, and pretty dot and blossom motifs. Perfect for the little ladies in your life!

Tip: Go for the unexpected. A delightfully textured pompom and a flower-motif ribbon give gifts a bit of whimsy. holiday-wrapping-purple.jpg
Passionate purple
Purple is a favourite of creative types because it's a blend of stimulating red and calming blue. Multiple accessories in similar shades of violet in different textures create standout presents that produce an awe factor under the Christmas tree.

Tip: Lara found this violet eucalyptus leaf at Michael's Arts & Crafts Superstore (michaels.com). Attached to the top of a parcel, the detail transforms presents into sophisticated displays.
