Travel inspiration

"The perfect sky blue reminds me of the front porches of the American South, where it's traditional to have a blue ceiling. A good strong lilac hue makes me think of one of my favourite houses in New Orleans. There aren't many places where a purple house looks like it fits right in!"

Colour palette

Holly's colour palette can be defined much like herself: "Sophisticated but fun." To achieve this look use Behr's Quiet On The Set MQ3-4 on the walls.

First paint project

"Painting over a very dark brown feature wall in our first house. It seemed like an easy, fast project but it was my first paint job and it was definitely more work to go from dark brown to a cream colour than I anticipated," Holly remembers. "But I loved the outcome and it gave me enough confidence to tackle painting our kitchen cabinets and I really caught the renovation and decorating bug after that."

The perfect paint project

"Painting furniture is an easy and affordable way to bring character to your space. I have an old cabinet that's a minty green shade on the front, but the top and sides are all white. It's unexpected and makes an old piece of furniture feel fresh and fun!" Try Behr's Whipped Mint MQ3-20 to achieve a similar look.

Best advice

From experience, Holly has learned to take the time to do the right prep: "Cover everything and use good painter's tape, so when it's time to crack open the paint can, you have no distractions or holdups."

Trick of the trade

Overwhelmed by all the options? "Start by deciding whether you want your walls to be the star of the room of the back-up singer to your furniture," advises Holly. To achieve this perfect blush pink try using Behr's Stolen Kiss MQ3-34.

An unexpected way to use paint

Here's a fresh idea: "Choose a tint for your trim and go white on the walls. It's so simple, and the result is really eye-catching," says Holly. For example, she would paint her bathroom trim a very pale grey with a blue undertone to set off all the white tile.
